See What I See #3: Winter Mute Swans And Their Frozen Web-prints In The Icy Snow

in seewhatisee •  7 years ago  (edited)

This is Wilma (a female Mute Swan). She and her mate (Fred) have been spending time in our backyard for the last few weeks. The trunk of the tree is providing a little wind-break from the icy winter winds.

This is one of my favourite photos.

I think that it's majestically elegant and peaceful.

I like to think that Mother Nature is emanating her perfection for all of us to see, if we will only stop long enough to acknowledge her magnificence.

I wanted to share this with you... so that you can See What I See.

Wilma is actually a little smaller than her mate Fred. She also doesn't have as big a black knob on her orange bill.

(This is how you can tell Mute Swans apart from Trumpeter Swans or Tundra Swans. Mute Swans have orange bills and the Male Mutes have a bigger black knob on the top of their bills than their female partners.)

Males also tend to be more aggressive than females

One exception to this circumstance would be if a female Mute swan felt that her young were being threatened. If this is the case, then "look out" is all I can say because these creatures will generally not back down and they tend to remember.

Here they are together.

I was slowly approaching them and got about 12 feet away before Fred started to changed his posture...

He waddled through the slush and started to puff his feathers out. Then he raised his wings to look bigger and a little more intimidating.

Then, the head bobbing started and it was at this point that @knarly327 got a little nervous for me. He was observing the situation from the comfort of our living room. He opened our patio door and asked me to back away from Fred before he charged me. (I had been paying attention to Fred's body language and I knew that I was treading on thin ice with his tolerance of me.)

I Backed Away Slowly

Fred came forward towards me about 5 more feet and then he stopped. I think that he did this so that I would know where he felt his territory boundary line was...at least for that particular day.

The next day, I took the photo (below) which is of frozen swan web-prints in the snow.

I had never seen frozen swan web-prints before and I thought that you might enjoy seeing what I see.

A little bit of winter magic, I'd say.

I took all the photos with my Apple 8+ cell phone.

I welcome your comments and I invite you to use the tag #seewhatisee. I also invite you to follow me on my journey...I'll do my best to show you things that are unique and unusual. ;)

Makes me miss the snow! I'm wearing shorts here in Phoenix.

You just stay right in Phoenix's heat, wearing your shorts @dajohns1420!...I promise to show you pictures so you don't have to freeze. ;)

Such elegant birds - but I agree, their demeanor changes pretty fast if you get too close!

I especially love the second photo next to the tree.

Are they raising young in their neighborhood? What time of year do they mate and hatch eggs?

I am very hopeful that they will lay a clutch of eggs. I think they mate in April and lay their eggs in May. That's what they did last year but we had usual weather conditions and the river flooded its banks. Sadly this washed their eggs away. If they stick around (and nothing bad happens) I am hoping to see their young this year. (Fingers crossed for them because they are beautiful to watch.)

That would be amazing to see! I hope you get a mild Spring so you can share some pictures.

Near the historic grist mill in the neighboring town there are usually some swan families to be seen carrying their young around on their backs as they float around the pond. It's quite sweet.

Excellent photos and story of your swans Rebecca. I know that it is a comfort and delight to see them stay around through it all.
Hey. That is a song that I know. Everything seems to be a song to me.
Some sad and some happy.
I know you and @knarly327 will be away for some time. So this is a very good entry for us on Steemit that watch for all your posts.
Thank you

Francis

Thank you Francis! You do so well to remember the names and lyrics to songs. These things usually escape me.
I am hoping to show a few more usual things in a couple of days. :)

Very interesting that you named them. Your fav pic is mine to, I like that one the best out of this lot. I also loved the photo when they are togather and one looks the other !

Thank you for taking a look at the collection @ashwinrajt! They are graceful creatures and I find them very relaxing to watch. I never get tired of them and think that their presence is a real gift. ;)

Could not disagree on that. I see you are from Ontario , we live in GTA area. I know a few people on ON on Steemit now. Hopefully later this year we would arrange a Steemit Meetup !

Yes! I'd love to participate in a Meetup! Are you right in Toronto or are you on the outskirts? My husband (@knarly327) and I live north of Quinte West/ Trenton right on the Trent-Severn Waterway. We'd be about a 2 hour drive east of the GTA.

Great to know. Me and my wife @deeps-kivi live in Brampton. May me we could arrange something if we have decent participation. Do you know other Steemians from ON ?

I know 2 others.

Thank you. These photos shared these very beautiful photos. This photo is awesome photo, and this post is very good

I've heard that the swans die of sorrow following the death of their mates. Is there any truth to this or is it just a poetic exaggeration?
