Should there be a federal agency to oversee and coordinate vehicle platoons? Similar to the Federal Aviation Administration?
Truck platoons are already traveling over Europe today.
In the future we should expect that each manufacturer or stakeholder will manage their own platoon. Perhaps each different platoon should keep enough safety space (e.g., 0.5 mile spacing or more) or rely on a controller.
Regardless, in the case of forming policies, enforcing rules and regulation, managing traffic, and investigating accidents do we need a new federal agency?
The answer tends to be yes, if we have learned from our past mistakes. Relying on companies to police themselves will place consumers at risk.
The question then becomes which country will first create such an agency? What will the model look like? Where will the funding come from?
