Why Traditional Hawaiian Practice is the Key to Self Healing

We have all heard the phrase, forgive and forget, or even the variation, forgive and learn. The idea behind it is to release anger towards people who have done us wrong in the past in order to be at peace with them as well as with ourselves. We are encouraged to let go of our desire to seek revenge on those who may have mistreated us, so that we can live more serenely. This concept may sound noble, but how do we actually go about doing it?

What Does Ho’oponopono Really Mean?
Ho’oponopono literally translates into making right, which means that if you are feeling out of whack in any way—emotionally, physically, or otherwise—you can correct your state by taking an honest look at yourself and repairing any areas of disharmony that come up. To do so, you create a space for all of your thoughts and feelings on a given subject. Then, you give them all equal attention and presence until they feel resolved. This may sound like New Age mumbo jumbo, but it’s been practiced for centuries by Hawaiians as a form of healing and forgiveness. The practice has even been scientifically proven to work when used alongside traditional Western medicine. So what does it mean? It means that whatever issue you have with someone else or yourself will only be corrected once you make peace with it within yourself first.

The 5-Step Process
There are several steps in Ho’oponopono that help clear your mind, restore balance, and forgive yourself. Start by saying I’m sorry to yourself. Next, identify what you want to release (your guilt or anxiety). Finally, remind yourself of what you want—it can be something as simple as peace of mind. Repeat these steps until you feel at ease. Other Practical Applications
No matter what other healing method you choose, it’s easy to add in self-forgiveness to your routine. Say I’m sorry or thank you out loud, focusing on one thing at a time. Some people use flower essences for health; or say, I love and approve of myself. Or perhaps you want a more tangible way of practicing ho’oponopono?
