Hey it's your trashy internet sister here and we have a question… Is anyone else confused or even a little scared by the term self care??
I’m Anna and when I think of it I think of posh bubble baths that are always just a little too warm, the water full of flowers that are gonna clog my drain, overpriced candles and shitty sheet masks that make me break out even more. It seems to be way too much time and effort for something I'm not really into but, it doesn't have to be like this though self care can be easy, simple, cheap and actually helpful to those who truly need it. Let me offer some dollar store wisdom for the broke ass bitches of today who really need to start caring for themselves. Here are some cheap and inexpensive things from the dollar store that are actually worth it:
Coconut oil: Use it as lipgloss/lipbalm, in your hair to keep it looking shiny and less frizzy, as lotion, lube, and even in your cooking if you like healthy shit.
If you mix tea tree oil and aloe gel it makes a great acne treatment and moisturizer. You can also control how potent it is so if you have sensitive skin this works for you too.
For aesthetic purposes and shit little scented candles, and cute little candle holders are great, and not expensive at all.
Epsom salts help with muscle relaxation (a need for us boss bitches on our feet all day).
Shower combs feel really soothing on the scalp. Great for blood circulation and promoting hair growth.
Wanna protect your hair? Go with Scrunchies, they don't damage your hair like regular hair bands, and they come in so many colours.
The Bolero company (which is sold at Dollar Tree) has a great line of skincare products, body washes, and lotions. To keep you smelling and looking good in and out of the shower.
The YESto face masks are super cheap, won't break you out and have actual skincare ingredients to keep your skin moisturized, bright and also help clear skin.
Treat me bath bombs are so cute, colorful and smell amazing. The best part is they won't give you a yeast infection.
Plant growing kits give you a step by step on how not to murder a baby plant within 5 days. So that you can fill your space with life and energy.
Mini jade roller to use with your skin care. It helps with puffiness and blood circulation.
Essential oils are good for so much shit!! Lemongrass, lavender, jasmine mint leaf, and tea tree are just a few of our favs. (If you want a full list of our most used essential oils and their uses, let us know!)
Hey Luna here with how I love to treat myself, and give myself the time to unwind and relax after a day of putting everyone else first. Unless I have to drive I make 4:20 (AM and PM) me time. With music and some weed rolled or ready to eat I complete my first step to relaxation. Next I like to take a hot shower with anything that smells of vanilla, coconut, or just something that smells yummy and sweet. In the shower I like to focus the water on the back of my neck and down my back following my muscles to relieve my back pain. As I do this I like to imagine all of the stress, tension, and negativity flowing off of me and running down the drain. I learned how to do massages, facial massages and scalp massages. You may think wow your boyfriend is so lucky lol... but in reality I hangout with myself the most and let me tell you learning how to massage was the best thing I ever did for myself. Everytime I wash my hair it is like going to the salon, it is my favorite part of showering (a scalp massager gives the same feeling but it kind of tickles a little).
Sometimes I feel too overwhelmed or anxious to relax like I have too much to do and too little time to do it… but when I heard this saying it gave me a new outlook on how to get things done:
"No new projects at the moment. There are restrictions to how much I can take on. And I need to finish those that I am committed to do before thinking ahead. But I'd rather they take final shape before we talk of them".
As a procrastination queen this helped a lot. Especially since I'm kind of a push over when people ask me to help them with a new project or something. Now I can say "no" with no guilt knowing that I can't help with everything. I found that before what I wanted and needed to do was always being pushed back because I kept saying yes to new things to do.
"You can't really help people until you've helped yourself first"
Taking care of yourself doesn't always mean shaving your pits and plucking your eyebrows. It's also about being in tune with how your body and mind feels, and knowing when you need time to put yourself first. Some people (boomers) don't always have an open mind to new lifestyles and choices. They can be controlling and judgmental, twisting things to make you feel guilty… but it's not selfish to save your money, to stay away from negative people, to stay neutral in a fight and not take sides, to take care of your body and health, to be in a loving consensual relationship, or even to leave home for new experiences and knowledge, even if you will be missed. These things can help you grow and can give you your own path to make. Some people are just set in there ways "Old dogs can't learn new tricks" but if they dont even try to understand they can go fuck themselves (maybe that's what they need). Set boundaries do what you need to limit the amount of negativity surrounding you. You don't need energy sucking vampires to have a good time. Surround yourself with people who can reciprocate your love, trust, support and loyalty… but never forget you are the one that will always truly have your back.
If you can give yourself the time to develop your skills and knowledge you don't only help yourself but others too by passing on and teaching what you have learned.
"Give a man a fish feed them for a day teach a man to fish a feed them for life"
Alone time is the best time. Many of my most relaxing days are spent alone, with my ringer off. Where I'm not tired because I got up when I wanted, where I don't have a headache from unnecessary problems and drama; and where I don't have to hide or censor my feelings or thoughts in order to not offend others.
