Self-efficacy is defined as “the belief in one’s own capabilities to organize and execute courses of action required to manage prospective situations.” In other words, self-efficacy is how much confidence we have in our abilities to perform certain tasks. We tend to think about self-efficacy in terms of physical activities like running, lifting weights, and playing sports. However, self-efficacy applies to any activity that requires us to take action. When we exercise, we develop self-efficacy. If we want to lose weight, we need to believe that we can do it. If we want to get a job, we need to believe we can succeed at getting hired. If we want to learn something new, we need to believe in ourselves.
