Getting to Know Your Market

This is really quite difficult because I have realised a few things on my writing journey.

  1. Not all readers are writers and not all writers are readers -My son doesn't write (although he is thinking about history blogging) but he reads A LOT. Interestingly a few of my BETA readers who don't write have said that too much detail is off putting, yet some of my writer friends have said, not enough detail can look lazy or dis-interesting! I mention this because I am open minded about the 'markets' as readers and writers can have different views when taking advice. At some point I have had to stop taking advice and make a balanced decision as no-one has a conclusive answer.
  2. My writing style covers different genre's- When it overlaps it's quite hard to describe, and if I can't describe it, how can I promote it? I have had to narrow it down to specifics.
  3. Critiques can be quite general and NOT in your writing style or genre- Again taking advice from others. I have had to take a step back and think about how , as a reader, I would look for a book in a favourite genre.

Direction from here:

I have to be more defined, and it pains me to do so, but I have to do it.

Important Key Words & Hashtags For My Book

  • Karmic stories
  • Supernatural
  • Thrillers
  • The occult
  • Suspense

My Genre:

Supernatural Thriller

I have had to learn about my unique writing talent to add a bit of a USP (unique selling point) and that is that I specialise in supernatural thrillers.

This is important, because up until now, I have just had an absolutely smashing book. Now I have an absolutely smashing book that I can describe to people who are interested in supernatural thrillers

So, where do I go about promoting my book to the wonderful people that would find it interesting?

I will be searching in the 'key words' to join:

  • Focus groups
  • Fan pages
  • Blogs

I do not intend on pushing my book on people with cold hard sales, but I need to get it right, and get it to the appropriate people.

I will be honest, I am still learning on this front, so I will see how it pans out.

That will be in my reflection week, the week before the official book launch!
