We went for a mile hike to get berries and got ran off by the musk of a bear. If you can smell them, you’re to close and need to move away from them.

So we decided to go check out our berry spot.
Berry picking spots are top secret here in Alaska. Because once someone knows they share, and then that person shares and so on.
Then it turns into the secret fishing spot that’s not to secret anymore. 😔
Then you have these woman that come out in droves with berry rakes who rape the land of everything! They have no respect for the berries, plants, animals or the land!
So I am sorry but I don’t know if I should share the exact location. It’s in Talkeetna.

So I will jump away from the tell tell indicators, unless they are seasoned Alaskan they shouldn’t know this area.
It was also raining💧
We are heading in on a trail my husband uses for hunting, he found this patch two years ago. It has been very good to us.

Along the way we found a lot of watermelon berries.

Here is a good close up and of the inside of one. You can see all the little seeds.

Up the path and around the corner we found our first sign of bear.

As we are keeping our eyes peeled for animals, we are also keeping an eye out for herbs. This is elderberry, it is poisonous when raw. People cook it down to kill off the poison and use it to treat colds and the flu. I hear it works great. Already eye balling all the berries we have seen.

We found a huge moose print in the trail. I think it’s amazing how large they get💗

Another pile of bear poop. Boy this bear really likes this trail.

We found some raspberries too! Yay!!! This is turning out to be a great scouting mission!

We are getting closer to the spot, a few more twists and turns on the trail and we will be there.
In the mean time I am keeping my self entertained with the little details I see.

This reminds me of a fairy home 🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️
Something about this stump kept pulling me in. I ended up take like six photos of it. 🤔

Then all of a sudden on the side of the trail we seen some infected/effected plant life. They had some kind of white stuff on them, like it was a frost. We didn’t touch any of it! 🙅‍♀️

Yay! We finally made it to the fork in the road. The berries are right around the corner now!

The hubby was a few steps ahead and came back to show me “there’s no berries”...

So I walk up to our berry patch and see this beautiful sight! 😍

Oh yeah! We don’t waste any time getting to it and picking berries. I found the same patch I always gravitate towards, found my log and started to pick.

We picked for a good half hour. Then we heard a squirrel alarm, he gave it a break, then did it again. I listen to the natives of the land. I told the hubby somethings up. He’s all “it’s because of us, because we are here”. Then two more squirrels alarm. I’m starting get antsy and worried. Well about that time a hawk flew over head and starts to scream the alert too. At this point I am freaking out. Something isn’t right. Because he perched maybe 30 feet away from us and screamed for 5 mins. By now my I told my hubby to go see what the hell is going on. He checked where the bird was perched but he couldn’t see anything. Okay... strange.

The hubby headed back to his spot he was at before the bird, he starts to pick again. About 5-10 mins later he says we need to leave. I smell musk. Those are some scary words right there! Neither of us had our guns. 🤦‍♀️ Stupid I know! But the whole time we are picking we where talking so the animals could hear us. But if you look back at the bear tracks you can see it’s a brown bear, and a young one. So our sounds might have made him curious.
LISTEN to the natives, they will let you know something is wrong! I wish my hubby would have listened a bit closer 😒

Same thing happened with a wolf pack a few years ago. They followed and listened to us sing, but didn’t cross the stream when we left. I heard the alpha scold and snap at the omegas who wanted to “play”. Yeah that was interesting. Hubby went back up that trail and found the wolf tracks on top of our tracks.

Anyways back to the berries and bears...
So we scooted out of there quickly. We picked more watermelon berries on the way down and spread the seeds. We found more blueberry bushes, we picked the berries and spread them too.
Oh and I found this new berry!

I took a picture so I could look it up when we got home.
It’s called a “trailing raspberry” or “five-leaves bramble”. They are suppose to have excellent flavor, and make great jams, jellies and pies.
Yeah I know I was trying to get away from a bear, but I had berries on the brain and seen something new.
✨Oh shiny!✨ If you guys only knew, lol! I get distracted easily sometimes. 😂

On the way out I seen this beautiful dying spruce tree. The spruce bettles have been killing off all the old growth pine in Alaska. They come in waves, almost like a season or a plege of locus. Again ✨Shiny✨ Then reality, ‘oh crap is the bear still behind us.’

On the way down the hill we find pretty rock to add to my garden. We always pick up rocks. We found green ones that look like Alaskan jade, red ones and ones that look like jasper.

Before we reach the car we go to the look out. We don’t stay long because of the locals. But we appreciated the view.

Here’s proof of our berry picking adventure

We got about a half gallon baggie full, not bad for about a half hours worth of picking by hand.
We stopped at the gas station grabbed a munchie and headed home.

I plan on getting as many berries as possible. I want to send some to my grandma. She fell and hurt her back, bulging disc 😣🤕 She just can’t catch a break! I was telling her about berry picking and she said she missed it. So I am going to do my best to hook her up.

Looks like such a wonderful place just to hike,to smell the air. Uh this made me want to go back home from the city

It smelled amazing!
Then with the rain and added sweetness of the berries. Yeah it was great!
Then go on a mini vaca, sounds like you need it. Go on a walk-about and see what you can find. Maybe new insperation 😊

oh yea, i have been living in a 50 times larger city for the last year and a half, need some of this

Ewww! I so know what that’s like. We are from Alaska and ended up in Brooklyn NY, then made it back home to Alaska. Only thing I liked about the city life was you could walk to stores of hitch a ride on the subway.
We lived there for four years too.
You could try finding a nice wooded jogging path, or a nice old grown park. I am sure that would help a little.
Just sit down kick your shoes off and listen to the sounds, and soak up some sun.

Oh yea. I remember a year back walking with my dog like every day 3 hours through woods and everything, lakes, only when i started to live in the city i saw how really happy i was to being able to do such a simple things

Living in a big city sure does put things into perspective.
I hope you find a nice place to ground yourself. Big cities can be very draining for those who where not raised in one. ✌️

Great day. I remember those ladies who rake the berries up lol. They would take buckets full, ridiculous. My spot was in Denali NP it was far away from people and those Denali Bear's had some blue poo by August. They didn't have fish to eat in the glacier rivers. You know who had crazy big bears, Katmai, those were some huge 🐻's.

Yeah I’m not to fond of the rake ladies at all, so much greed. Hubby wants to buy a rake, “just the little one. I’m all hell no! They hurt the plants and land! I would rather take my time and put a lot of love into my berries. Anyways if we used a rake we wouldn’t get blue stained hands. LOL
I haven’t hiked in Denali NP, but it would be awesome to do and to be away from all the people.
My heart aches for the bears, stupid humans! Maybe if the young bear follows our sent to where it was the heaviest, he will find the berries. I’m good with that.
Blue poo 😂
Where the trail was, it was close to Montana Creek. Not many fish making its way up this far. They have to get past all the boat netters, then the Deshka dipnetters, then all the fishing holes along the way. It’s a wonder we still have minuscule amount of fish in the rivers.

I have no idea where Katmai is, where’s that?

Katmai national Park. It's the place, all the pictures tourist buy of the bears hanging out by a water fall, come from.

Oh! I had no idea, cool!

Always nice getting to return to your secret berry patch! The bears are out in full forces this year. Everyone keeps saying they are mad from the salmon being gone. Have fun in the woods and stay safe!

It was very nice to return.
Yeah I wouldn’t be surprised they are pissed about the salmon. I know I am!
Have there been more attacks? I don’t follow the news or anything on the local FB pages, way to liberal for me(no I’m not republican). It’s the whole my way or the highway bull shit that pisses me off.
I hope to keep my kids and self safe for sure, thanks 😊

Hubby was stationed in Alaska and he very much appreciated your photos of Alaska. He misses it a lot and wonders how different his old stomping grounds are from nearly 30 years ago. I've always told him I want to go to Alaska for a long vacation. He says it's beautiful and wild. Once you step out of your house or car, you're part of the food chain. Be careful!

There are so many more people 🤢
I am very glad to live so far out of town.

This reminds me of that children's book where the boy and the bear cub mix up their mothers while picking blueberries.

Sounds like a fun adventure.

We have read this story many times

That's it!

That is a big bear! But so nice going for a steem stroll in your neck of the woods (corny pun intended!) It's so wierd seeing all the green and open shoes in Alaska! But I guess the summer is very short. Enjoy your yummy berries. Hope your grandma recovers quickly.

I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊
I hate shoes, as soon as I’m home shoes go off.
We have the most beautiful shades of green! 🌳🌿🍃
In the summer I wear no shoes or sandals. Even walking around out side doing chores. I clean my feet of corse, but I just hate shoes. Socks are the devil! 👹 Especially when they touch my toes!!!!
Yeah summer is on its tail end. I can’t wait to dig into them!
Thanks, my grandma is in so much pain she can’t even sleep 😞 I wish I could sneak her some RSO

Poor old dear! I felt the same about my grandpa. We tried sneaking in the natural remedies but of course the nursing home are horrified and very disapproving if they find out.

I'm the same with shoes. Or without! Hate them. I wish I could go without when we're outside but we have very rough terrain. Thorns and mostly shale, rocky ground. Not to mention the snakes. I have a tendency to get to close for comfort to them and so rather wear high boots when I leave the house

It's about time to go huckleberrying here. Mr Ruger or Mr . .45 always comes along. There are also sarvisberries in the mountains. We have domesticated raspberries though.

Yeah I have an AR and a Judge that I normally carry. But I need a holster that actually fits my Judge.
As we where walking up the first hill the kids asked my hubby if he had a gun. “No, it’s in the car”. 🤦‍♀️ Yeah I forgot to add that.

I don’t think I have ever had huckleberries.
I got my first raspberry off a bush that decided to grow next to my house.

It was yummy! No I didn’t share, lol.
The flavor exploded in my mouth! Man it was good!
