Altered Carbon season 2 - Something is corrupting the stacks

I don't think I have written about Altered Carbon before, the first season was released 2 years ago and the second one was just released a few weeks ago. The story is about a futuristic world where being immortal is possible. People have a small device called "stack" inside their heads that holds their conscience. As long as their stack isn't damaged, they can live forever and change bodies if needed.

The more wealthy people can have backups so if their stack is destroyed, they can still come back to life. The main character is an envoy, a super soldier that is great at fighting and enduring all sort of difficult situations that would break most people.

This futuristic world is dystopian, there is a lot of corruption and general degeneration so no wonder why the main actor always has a troubled face, and this applies to both seasons even though each one has a different actor. Since he is an envoy, he is capable of doing tasks and jobs that would otherwise be almost impossible.

Season 2 happens 30 years after season 1. Remember that people can be immortal in this place and change bodies so 30 years is actually not that much. However, this season's tone was different than the first one. I guess the feeling of novelty that I felt when watching season 1 wasn't as hard this time because I was already used to this futuristic world.

There were some additions whose acting performance was regular. For the most part, this story seemed like the natural progression of season 1 except that in the last few episodes something new appears that introduces new possibilities for a new kind of unknown enemy. I think the creators took much time in introducing this new villain because this turned the first half of the season as almost pointless, and certainly the first 2 episodes.

Despite some bad parts, the show is still a good one. No as good as season 1 but it is still worth watching. Netflix also released an animated spin-off called Altered Carbon that I will be watching tomorrow. I am really hoping it turns out fun.

The best

  • Nice addition to the Altered Carbon series.
  • Good to see a show with a cyberpunk world.
  • The new villain was unexpected and interesting.

The worst

  • I think the show has the potential to be much better. I wonder what HBO could have accomplished with this world.
  • This season felt like a small downgrade from season 1. It is certainly difficult to maintain high quality with such a massive, futuristic and demanding world.

I'm only going for chapter 2 of the 2nd season, I'm still not convinced by the new actor, but I'll keep watching it, today I'll watch two more chapters.

By the way, I recommend you see Kidding, if you haven't seen it yet, it's starring Jim Carrey.

Yeah so far I have watched season 1 from Kidding, I wrote an article about it some weeks ago. I will begin watching season 2 one of these days.

If you like Altered Carbon make sure to check their animated film called Altered Carbon Resleeved, it was cool.

Yeah, I'll look at it as soon as I'm done watching the second season. It looks pretty good, I saw the trailer and it reminded me of Spiderman Into The Spider Verse, it has a very similar aesthetic.
