Kepala Pos Pemantau Gunung Api Sinabung, Armen Putra, mengatakan semburan abu vulkanik mengarah ke tenggara-selatan. Selain semburan abu vulkanik, Gunung Sinabung juga meluncurkan awan panas setinggi 4.900 meter ke selatan-tenggara dan 3.500 meter tenggara-timur.

Saat Gunung Sinabung erupsi, juga terjadi gempa selama 607 detik. Usai Gunung Sinabung erupsi, sejumlah desa di Kabupaten Karo gelap gulita akibat tertutup material abu vulkanik.

Sejumlah media asing turut menyoroti letusan dahsyat Gunung Sinabung. Salah satunya adalah media asal Amerika Serikat, US News & World Report.

Dengan judul "Indonesia's Sinabung Volcano Unleashes Towering Ash Column", media tersebut menyoroti ketinggian abu yang dihempaskan dalam erupsi itu.

"Letusan Gunung Sinabung di Pulau Sumatra telah melepaskan kolom abu setinggi 5.000 meter ke atmosfer dan awan panas ke lerengnya," tulis media tersebut.

Hal serupa juga diwartakan oleh Time, dengan artikel berjudul "Indonesia's Sinabung Volcano Unleashes Towering Ash Column".

"Juru Bicara Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana Sutopo Purwo Nugroho mengatakan, awan panas mengarah sejauh 4.900 meter ke selatan-tenggara."

Sementara itu lewat artikel berjudul "Indonesia's Sinabung volcano erupts again", News.com.aumengabarkan bahwa Australia mengeluarkan peringatan "level merah" kepada perusahaan penerbangan Negeri Kanguru.

"Pusat penasihat abu vulkanik regional di Darwin mengeluarkan peringatan 'level merah' kepada perusahaan penerbangan," demikian tulis media asal Australia itu.

Media South China Morning Post juga menyoroti hal yang sama dengan artikel berjudul "Red notice warning for airlines as Indonesia's Sinabung volcano unleashes towering column of ash".
