I mentioned before that I was currently a college student, but I did not mention to which college I was attending. I am currently enrolled in The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Just this last week I went with my boyfriend to fix some of his transfer issues. (He's transferring! You don't understand how happy this makes me.) While we were there I wanted to show him around...I may have mentioned I like photography, but I forgot to mention how much I love artwork, and museums, and basically anything related to art. As it happened UTEP had an artwork display that had just been installed the day before, (Of course I had to see it!)
One of our favorite displays happened to be the "Iron Heart", it was so breathtaking, the way the heart had been designed; as a mechanism. It interpreted an object with no feelings, with just one function and purpose; to keep beating. As you can see the heart is made out of iron and looks like a gladiator helmet, which indicates the strength of this heart. It could early be interpreted as how cold and hard the heart is, not being able to feel an emotion. If you examine the heart you can notice that there are gears inside of the heart, like a watch has. This indicates both the time and the and the purpose, the gears are here to indicate that the heart just like a watch has a certain time limit, there will come a moment when the gears will stop turning, and the heart will stop beating, as for it working mode, the gears show that the heart is simply another machine. That the heart is simply here to pump blood, unable to feel, unable to do anything other than the job it was designed to do. This could in turn be closely compared to our society today. How each and every individual is no longer concerned for others, they just think about themselves. The act of caring has long disappeared, and has left us with selfishness, no room for loving. Because in this world we can't trust anyone anymore, it's best to have a cold heart to prevent it from breaking.
This was another display that we found particularly interesting, because as the iron heart, it tied in with the way society has portrayed and caused us to have a certain view of relationships. If you were to look closely at this artwork you can see there is splatters over the wall with a patterns, as we focus on the largest we can see there are syringes, dicks, football and the number 23. The football shows the strength and adrenaline that the orgasm would cause. The 23 shows the average number of sexual partners a person has, as for the dicks is a simple matter of the ejaculation that they will produce. As for the syringe it simply indicates the infections and diseases that could be produced through intercourse. The smaller splatters that surround this one you can see are covered by either baby bottles or dicks. The reason is that the sperm can either hold the ability to produce a baby, or it may be infertile and simply be ejaculation from the dick.
Both of these artworks were very controversial, in the sense that they were leaned more toward liberalism. Where now we are accustomed to one-night stands, and lack of emotions. I was simply mesmerized by how detailed each artwork was created, and how they succeed in making their point across.
