Foley art and SFX

Music often provides entertainment for the mass audience, but when it comes to videos and movies, one major aspect that is often overlooked is actually the sound effects. Foley art is the profession in which someone layers in sounds by recording them firsthand into a microphone, then editing it onto the movie in post production. Foley artists normally deal with sounds that are coming from real objects, such as galloping horses, putting a glass of water down, etc etc.

These sounds can obviously be made in a studio, but recording it in post production makes the sound crispier and often gives a more dramatic effect to the viewers. This, alongside SFX, gives a more “full” effect to whatever is being shown on the screen. SFX is the art of layering digital sounds to things that are more difficult to simulate. A very good example of this would be from the movie “Transformers”, where they layer incredibly detailed designed sounds onto the robots when they transform.

Without Foley Art and SFX, movies would be way different than what they are today. Sounds, as most people know, play a bigger impact than sight in films. It’s no wonder only a handful of studios provide this service in Malaysia!
