How to keep your work team motivated?

Motivation & Leadership

At one time or another, regardless of the position we occupy in an organization, we have all been infected by the virus of demotivation for various reasons, ranging from a leader with zero leadership skills/capacity to an unhealthy work climate, which in turn causes organizations a high percentage of staff turnover due to resignation or layoffs, which ultimately represents economic losses (often significant) if the rotation of personnel is not controlled.

In this note we will share 12 simple recommendations that can help you keep your team motivated.

  1. Cordiality: Keep a friendly atmosphere in your place and work team.

  2. Honesty: It is very important to always speak the truth.

  3. Adequate conflict management: Sometimes there are small differences between co-workers due to perception, misunderstandings or inadequate distribution of roles. The best way to do this is to act as a mediator between colleagues so that everyone can express their point of view and reach an agreement/resolution. Do not make the mistake of making a comment for or against anyone involved as this could cause more stress and a tense environment can become toxic.

  4. Recognition: Recognizing individual or team effort or advancement is an obligation. Sometimes just saying,"Good work is enough.

5.Effective communication: The human being listens to respond and not to understand. Make sure you don't make this mistake. Before reacting to any event, first analyze and investigate the situation; second, understand the situation, third, take action and finally, follow up on what you have resolved. You must make sure you give clear instructions. Don't assume you made yourself clear.

6.Share: Sit at the table and have lunch together at least once a week to discuss non-work related topics. This will serve to strengthen ties.

7.Feedback: This should be constant and not just when you need to call attention or communicate something negative. Feedback should always be oriented towards the positive aspects and you should guide your collaborator to identify his/her weaknesses or areas of improvement, and between the 2 working to improve whatever needs to be improved (the collaborator with his/her commitment and the leader giving timely follow-up).

8.Respect the ideas and creativity of your team: Have you ever given a job and when you saw the final result, everything was very different from what you originally delivered? - This can be considered as demoralizing for some people.

9.Don't impose: Many leaders make the mistake of saying,"This is because it's true," or "It's always been that way," or "I do it this way. When working with adults, they must understand the reason for the assignment, the objectives and the impact of the assignment in order to perform effectively and efficiently.

10.Be Flexible: We must understand that although we are in a leadership position, we are also human beings and it is very important to be empathetic with the difficult situations that at some point the companions may go through.

11.Prudence and Reliability: Refrain from commenting on the life or personal situation your team members shared with you in confidence. If they approached you and decided to share something intimate with you, do not betray confidentiality.

12.Avoid comparisons: All people have different skills and abilities. Instead of comparing one member of your team to another, help the person develop what you want to see/achieve in him/her.

Finally, while it is true that the leaders of an organization are responsible for maintaining and creating a favorable working environment for their people to be motivated, the entire burden of this work MUST NOT rest on them alone, as many times the negative/toxic attitude that we may present in our workplace influences the way we perceive the different situations that can arise.
