An Encounter with the Driver Ants: The Beginging

There are many stories told about the driver ants of West Africa, for they are the fiercest and most terrible of their kind.
They are called drivers because they drive all living creatures from their paths. Even man cannot always stop their advance, and though fire generally turns them aside, it is not always successful. Driver ants have been known to drive straight through a fire, their bodies putting out the flames, and allowing their followers to continue unhurt. As for water, when they come to a stream, they are able to make bridges of their bodies, and so pass over safely to the other side.

They march in great columns, with the large ants on the outside and the smaller ones in the middle. Led and protected by soldiers, they move steadily forward in a countless black mass, devouring everything, living or dead, which lies in their path. They move mostly at night, when their victims are likely to be asleep, and so can easily be surrounded, attacked, and overcome. There is nothing more frightening than to waken up in the darkness and find yourself covered with these horrible, biting insects.
A friend of mine once dreamt that a column of driver ants attacked him. They marched up onto his head and in amongst his hair. Then they began to bite. The dream was so real that he woke up feeling the pain. He put his hand up to his hair and immediately they were covered by crawling and stinging bodies.
With a cry of horror, he pulled up the mosquito net and leapt out of bed. Then he dashed across the floor and turned on the light. Pouring in under the door where he stood was a broad stream of ants, and another column was coming in through the window. His feet was covered in ants, for he had stepped in the column near the door, and he hopped and jumped about like a creature gone mad, brushing and shaking ants out of his hair, and slapping them out of his feet.
The angry ants rushed about in all directions, and within a few seconds the whole floor was covered by a fierce, stinging carpet of them. Everywhere there were ants, thousands of ants, and only inside the bed there did not seem so many. So, having the moment before leapt out of bed, he now dashed back across the floor and leapt in again.
