I recently started using ShotCut.

ShotCut is a GNU (Free Software) Non-linear video editing application that doesn't have a big learning curve to get started and has a lot of features under the hood. I'm running version 16.07.01 and that one has a few oddities that should be fixed in the newer versions.

I'm actually very satisfied with ShotCut as it lets me do everything I want to do with out any strange showstoppers.
