Rick and Morty: I need more episodes!

in shows •  3 years ago

This series has been out for a while and since I also look at memes frequently there were a lot of references that I didn't understand. I thought it was just another nerd thing that I wasn't going to enjoy nearly as much as the next guy so I didn't even watch it until recently. Now I have seen all episodes that currently exist and have watched many of them multiple times. It, like Family Guy is a go-to series for me to watch while I am going to bed. It's funny even if you have already seen it.

I know that I will likely have to wait another year for new episodes and that is a real shame but since the writing is so good, it probably takes a lot of time to make these things. I guess I would rather wait and have the finished product be good than to have them just crank out episodes as fast as they can.

The show is completely preposterous and also quite intelligent at the same time. Rick is a genius scientist that has a difficult time relating to almost anyone else in the world other than his grandson Morty who goes on various adventures with him. The episodes are not usually connected to one another and therefore if you have never seen it before you can basically start on any episode that you want and you wont be confused because there is very little that happens earlier in a season that actually has any bearing on later episodes.

One thing I would recommend to people that have never seen this show before that is quickly becoming one of my favorite animated series of all time is to NOT start with season 1 episode 1. Since the episodes' storylines are not connected for the most part, you can start basically wherever you want.

Personally, I feel as though the pilot episode is probably the worst one. I think they were still kind of searching for an identity at that point and didn't really know how they were going to portray the characters, because of this Rick isn't as funny in the pilot episodes as he is later on in the show. This is the reason why years ago when I tried to watch this to see what everyone was so excited about, that I got kind of turned off about it and stopped watching.

Recently, due to the fact that I had nothing else to watch on Netflix I started in season 2 and at least for me, that was a much better place to start. By that point the creators had already established a huge following and they had more resources and a much better idea as to how they were going to portray the characters. I'm pretty sure I watched all of season 1 back-to-back in one day

and here comes the problem with the show: You always want more and there are currently only 5 seasons. Only seasons 1-4 are available on Netflix so if you enjoy it, unfortunately, you are going to run out of material pretty quickly. I did a torrent for season 5 and it was a bittersweet ride because while I was happy to have the latest material I knew that once I finished all of those I wouldn't have any more to watch.

Once you become intimately familiar with the main characters it becomes even better

There are very few series that I have enjoyed enough to go back and watch the whole thing a second and in this case a 3rd or even 4th time but Rick and Morty is one of them. The others would be Family Guy and Friends. I can't really think of any others. Even Southpark outside of a few episodes doesn't really have the same rewatch value IMO.

So in the past I ignored this show because I started with episode 1 of season 1, which I think is a mistake and perhaps many other people have done the same thing. I really feel as though this is one of the best animated shows of all time and I simply cannot wait until season 6 is released. Unfortunately it looks as though that might not even happen at all in 2022.

If you are not watching Rick and Morty yet, I highly suggest you check it out. You will need to have a very good command of the English language to "get it" and I can't really comment on if the subtitles are any good. I don't know if the humor would translate all that well and since the characters normally speak very frequently or even using made up words, it could be difficult for anyone to translate this properly.
