I had an idea the other day.
Successful projects are HARD. Especially side-projects that grew out of a passion or an idea of an individual.
There are so many components that make up a successful project.
The idea, the execution, the marketing, monetisation, fulfilment, etc. Or even the startup capital.
The reason why it's so difficult for one-man shows to success is because it's so rare for one person to possess so many skills at one time.
The rare one-person project to succeed like Flappy Bird, succeeded due to virality. Not to downplay the genius of the creator, but it would be difficult for him to repeat the success of Flappy Bird even if he tried. Virality is just more art than science IMO.
In any case, here's my point. A lot of creators let their projects die simply because they were not willing or able to bring in the help they require because they do not know what help they require.
What if we had a platform where creators listed their projects and people could offer to help?
For instance, I'm good at marketing.
If I get onto a marketplace and see a genius app that I'll never be able to create for the life of me. Would I want to do the marketing for a cut of the profits?
Heck yeah!
Even if I have no promise of ANY monetary returns and all I might end up getting is a non-profit project that just has my name in the invisible "credits" section of the site/app?
Well, I'll be a little bit sad but still, heck yeah!
Individual aspiring coders usually don't care too much about the money when it comes to side projects. They just want to create some impact.
Individual aspiring marketers usually don't care too much about the money when it comes to side projects. They just want to create some impact.
Individual aspiring creatives usually don't care too much about the money when it comes to side projects. They just want to create some impact.
Is there a common thread somewhere?
Business types have tons of ideas. But they often have trouble bringing their ideas to fruition.
I'm pretty sure something similar has been done, but I also think it's not exactly in the same spirit.
I would love to hear your opinions about this concept!
Yay or nay?
Pretty much yay! Have you seen any development of the idea during the year that passed since you wrote the post? For the code part, there already exists GitHub, while for the marketing part - hmm, group discussions in social networks?)
