Silverbugs: Sioux nation coins

in silverbugs •  8 years ago

I received some noteworthy new coins this weekend:

One ounce of .999 silver coin

20 ounces added to my stack

These coins are interesting because they are an American government coin that isn't produced by the US government but instead the Sioux Sovereign nation. These coins are not legal tender however, since only the US mint has the privilege of creating legal tender coins.

So in theory, if I tried to spend one of these, even to buy something on a Sioux reservation, I could be thrown in jail. If this seems unfair, of course it is. Why shouldn't the Sioux nation, which has lived here for thousands of years, be able to fashion silver into round pieces to use as money?

Well, in any case, when the time comes, I won't be spending these as money but instead selling them as one ounce chunks of silver.

Will copper be issued, too?

It doesn't seem like they have a copper version.

That is too bad, it would open up a market for people less wealthy.

Nice hobby.

I saw the Indian Ag very nice @neoxian

Joke - What type of eggs did the Indian , like?
Scramble

@neoxian nice to see u collect coins, it was a hobby for me long back , keep it up mate

It's not really that I collect coins, but rather, I collect gold and silver, some of which happen to be in coin form.

what tests do you do to check to see if your silver is real . I know about the magnet test using an earth magnet and ice test . And the suspended in water weight test . None of these damage the silver do you know of any others .

I do the magnet test and some others. I'll do a post about it sometime, thanks for your question!

also you can listen to the sound a known real silver round makes and use that as a base/benchmark. Good youtube vids out about that.

great collection

These are beautiful.

Some laws are crazy.

I was just thinking about my favorite silver bug because I haven't seen your posts coming across my feeds! Lo and behold...we have silver coins and posts that I've missed. Bad Steemit, Bad!
I think it's a shame about the silver coins not being used as legal tender too. And in New York, if you find any precious gems or gold, it belongs to the state. How ridiculous is that? So glad I'm not in NY anymore.
