The Book of Exodus tells us the story of Moses and the Golden Calf during Israel's journey to the promised land.
The Israelites had crossed the Red Sea and abandoned slavery in Egypt, but they had not forgotten the pagan customs that existed in that country. Many during the journey were complaining about the hardships and longed for certain comforts that were in Egypt and not all those who accompanied Moses were convinced of the mission of going to a new country promised by the Lord, the land of Canaan. There was a certain discontent in the people of Israel, and this was what led to the idolatry of the Golden calf.
Moses had climbed the sacred mountain and there according to the Book of Exodus the prophet received the Decalogue; but it happened that after the climb to the Mount to talk with God, Moses was slow to come down.
In front of this situation, the Book of Exodus tells what occurred:
"When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, ´Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him.´" Exodus 32:1.
When Moses came down from the Mountain, he saw the golden calf, he smashed the tablets of the law that he carried in his hands and destroyed the idol.
And so Moses prayed to God for the sin of the people:
"Then Moses returned to the LORD and said, ´Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written" Exodus 32:31-32.
This story from the Bible shows us how serious the sin of idolatry is, and in general, all the sins related to the vanity of man. God demanded of Israel a reverential fear, and for this fear, Israel was blessed. God is not a God of death but of life, and Israel to know this life had to abandon that idolatry that leads to death.
