Home owner's hairy encounter with enormous brown snake on the Gold Coast - myGC.com.au

A MAN is lucky to be alive following a frightening encounter with an enormous eastern brown snake at his house on Queensland’s sunny Gold Coast.

The man was reportedly gathering his tools for work early on Wednesday morning when he found the deadly 1.7m snake curled up under a tarp at his house at Ormeau, on the northern end of the Coast.

Believing the monster reptile was a harmless carpet python due to its sheer size, the man tried catching it when all of a sudden, it started striking at him.

Professional Gold Coast snake catcher Tony Harrison was called out to the Tillyroen Road home to catch the six-foot serpent which he said was as wide as his arm and estimated to weigh around 3.5kg. Scroll down to see the video.

When Tony arrived at the house, he was greeted by the man’s wife who also thought the chunky snake was a python.

“[your husband] is lucky he is actually going to work because this is a six-foot eastern brown,” Tony said as he live-streamed the catch on his Facebook page.

“Is it an eastern brown?” the shocked woman could be heard questioning. “Woah … that is so scary!” she exclaimed.

“This is the second deadliest snake on the planet that your husband tried to play with himself,” Tony replied.

“He is just lucky it is a cold morning … it was a very very cold snake, lucky for him.”

The snake was carefully bagged and will be sent to Gosford Reptile Park where it will be milked for anti-venom.

The eastern brown snake is considered to be the second-most-venomous land snake on the planet, surpassed only by the Inland Taipan.

Wednesday’s catch comes three weeks after Tony and his wife Brooke, also a professional snake catcher, were called out to bag a six-foot brown snake at a woman’s house in Tallebudgera, on the other end of the Coast.

The large eastern brown had made its way into her house and wrapped itself around her young son’s LEGO city.

In similar circumstances, the homeowner had initially mistaken the brown for a non-venomous python.

Tony said it was breeding season and male browns were on the move, looking for a mate as the weather warms up.
