Body Upgrade

BODY UPGRADE

It is a bittersweet truth that physical beauty is something one can possess only temporarily. Eventually the ravages of time take their toll, hair loses is lustre, and the glowing, firm skin of youth is replaced with the wrinkled, papery skin of old age.

This, however is not the fate for a virtual girl in a virtual world. In fact, quite the opposite is the case, for as we head into the future, technology develops and this enables us to upgrade our bodies, taking advantage of the latest techniques in computer-generated images.

Second Life has had its share of such upgrades since I joined in 2005. Mesh bodies is the latest example, and I was fortunate enough to get hold of one thanks to the generosity of my beloved Jamie. Here I am with my former body.

And this is the new-improved me.

Admittedly, when I am fully clothed the differences are not all that obvious. But these new mesh bodies are put together much more nicely than the bodies of old. I feel great in my new body and look forward to more upgrades in the future!

Bring it on!

What do you do in SL? Develop real estate? Chat with strangers? Go exploring?

@donnadavisart and I hung out there for a bit but we could never really figure out what we were supposed to do, and it all seemed so complicated.

Think of SL as something of an evolution of MMOGs. Unlike single-player games, which usually have an ending, massively multiplayer online games are meant to be played continuously. They are always on, always present, and there is no ending.

This presents something of a challenge to the designers. In order for people to want to continue playing the MMORPG, new content has to be included.

So, imagine that somebody has an idea. Why not give the players themselves the power to create new content? Let’s embed within the MMORPG the means to build stuff, to form groups, to stream video and music. Let’s give them the opportunity to create their own entertainment.

Now you have a virtual world where, if there can be said to be a point to all of it, it would be to figure out what you want to do. Maybe you will enjoy the pursuits others have already included. Personally, I like attending philosophical discussion groups and shopping for nice things for Jamie and I to wear. There are some great SL artists who design whole islands full of amazing art pieces.

I know what you mean about the complexity. I have been in SL for over a decade and I still struggle with some aspects of it.
