Society with equality, tiers, or chaos

I'm often confused about how a society can function. Throughout history there have been often brutal arrangements / divisions in society to make it function. Due to this history I wonder if true equality is possible or what that would mean. So many people love to follow so maybe it's an illusion. One thing I know when people are just excluded from society things run to chaos and rebellion. When you preach the illusion of freedom and pump people with desire for material goods, when they find out opportunity in their lives does not exist, shit gets real and ugly quick at times. There had always been a tacit understanding that society was segregated, tiered, full of different classes. Now we lie to the people telling them there is equality of access and opportunity when there is not. Those at the bottom have little education, dead end jobs, financial burdens, and drug and crime filled lives while the fat cats at the top make sweetheart deals with each other in their bubble of luxuries. Things seem ripe to pop.

It ain't without it's problems but times are pretty good. The lowest amounts of absolute poverty ever in history and that's on top of s population explosion. We're doing some things right.
Absolute equality is impossible: you cannot inhabit the same space and time as me. There will be differences. So, we instead talk about equality in terms of something: equal rights etc. Exactly what those things are is part of the conversation. But, I have to agree that equal opportunity and equal outcome are linked in ways were unequal outcomes create unequal opportunities.
So, despite it all, I remain hopeful.
