Political Correctness- Has It Gone Too Far?

Being politically correct (PC) has changed over the last century which is not surprising when you look at the change in meaning of simple words like virgin and gay. Originally a virgin was a young unmarried woman, now it means a person who has not had sexual intercourse. Gay once meant light-hearted and carefree, now its a nice word to describe a homosexual person. In context this song sounds funny and no one would sing it now.

Before I go off on a tangent I should check the current definition of 'Political Correctness' or PC before criticising the people who are misusing or misinterpreting how the term should be applied.

'The term political correctness is used to describe language, policies, or measures that are intended to avoid offence or disadvantage to members of particular groups in society.' Wikipedia

Although PC was used before the 20th century it became more popular with totalitarian regimes before 1945. The phrase 'politically correct' was used to describe total adherence to a particular dogma and it had nothing to do with avoiding offence. In NATZI Germany, Stalin's Russia and Mao Tse Tung's China not being politically correct usually meant a visit to a re-education camp or worse. Salt mines were popular deterrents.

Post war the phrase morphed its way to being an implied insult that Socialists and Communists used to separate those that dogmatically followed the party line from those that believed in compassion before dogma.

Later, with the help of the 'New Left' movement PC became a social justice platform. The poor teaching of PC in schools and universities has produced a distorted view of the meaning of compassion and the rights of minorities and individuals.

We have seen strange changes in language to try to avoid giving offence, fat people are horizontally challenged, short people vertically challenged, thin people are physically challenged, stupid people mentally challenged and so on.

The intense desire to avoid offence has created some of the most peculiar and ridiculous governmental and company decisions one could imagine. The recent law allowing same-sex marriage in Australia has seen an avalanche of demands from minorities demanding changes in schools, toilets and the language. These demands are encroaching on the human rights and civil liberties of the bulk of the population and as such have gone too far.

Saul Alinsky famous for his book 'Rules For Radicals' wrote

“The social justice people are always on the side of compassion and ‘victim’s rights,’ so objecting to anything they do makes you instantly a perpetrator. There’s no place you can stand without being vilified, and that’s why it keeps creeping forward."

He continues

"There’s no compassion at all. There is resentment, fundamentally.”

I have litearly been having this kind of conversation with people on steemit for the past couple of weeks. even got into it last night on air on the Pirate waves over on the PAL network.

I think a fundamental issue is a lack of understanding of the meaning of words. People having such adverse reactions to even having a discussion on particular topics has conditioned us into treating these subjects as completely taboo, they should NEVER be spoken of. In turn this has made us completely ignorant to the nuances of what constitutes "offensive".

I fear humanity is headed down the path of Idiocracy.... and only independent thought can save us.

The silent majority often fear being vilified and attacked physically if they object to political correctness. This is a reality in public places far too often.
Thank you for the upvote, as yet I havent read the instructions on how to incentivise or how to reward others. I have been waiting to get some posts on the blog before I venture too far into the water.

i would argue that we have had the thought police infiltrate our minds and condition us all to feel as though it is "wrong" to discuss or even think about what is "offensive". This process has made clear understanding of what is offensive and why near impossible to define, so we are all in fear of being offensive as we don't know what is or isn't offensive PLUS we are scared to ask. Its an incredibly clever way to keep hoomanity divided... and we take the bait hook, line and sinker every time we get triggered ;)

if you would like to find like minded people i highly recommend installing Discord and joining the communities mentioned above. not only will you find people which are on the same path , but your account will grow, as will your rewards, blogging skills, etc. tthe greater part of the steemit platform is the communities. i look forward to seeing you there sometime in the future :)

Yes I think I should be more social and join some groups

look me up when you get there :)

It’s getting too politically correct now. You can’t say a word without offending someone

PC is so bad that it is about time the worm turns. Either the politicians are the new left, or have no backbone, frightened of not being re-elected. 👿

And that’s why people like the Donald are getting into power. Their sick of it. Interested to see how Brexit does

We have our own political drama playing out in Australia as I type. It may even make your news channels. I am interested in Brexit as well, it may stymie the German 4th Reich.

The Germans are sneaky. We have our eye on them ! 👀👀. I didn’t hear what’s going on down there. When is your country gonna tell the queen good riddance ?

I think monarchists are in the majority at the moment, we like the royal family and also the Dutch royal family ( a Tasmanian girl married the prince).
The prime minister here has lost the confidence of his party, but he refuses to resign.
