Starflyer 59's first album will always remind me of road trips. In my early 20's, my friends and I would hit the road fairly frequently. Sometimes it was to visit our friend at college in the Upper Peninsula, or sometimes heading to a concert or music festival. I drove an old minivan that my parents sold me cheap when they upgraded, and it had a cassette player in it. This somewhat limited our music choices, since we all owned mostly CDs at that point. But each of us had a small collection of tapes.
There were 3 reasons we might have a tape instead of a CD. They had all been either: recorded from a friends' CD (this was before recordable CDs were readily available), found for cheap at the record store, or bought directly at a show from a band who didn't have enough money to make a CD.
This album was in the second category. It was a demo copy, which meant the record store kept it to let customers hear the album before deciding to buy it. Once they had sold all their copies of the album, they would sell the demo copy for a couple dollars. This was probably the best 3 dollars I ever spent at a record store. We all had slightly different musical tastes, but this was one album we could all agree on. We played it every trip at least once.
This song in particular always struck me as particularly good driving music.
