Day 8

Today was the first proper day of the course. I got up at 0615 and had some cereal for breakfast. We were all in the classroom ready for our first lecture at 0700. The first lecture was ridiculously boring – health and safety – death by health and safety! A lot of it is common sense, but I suppose we have to go through everything so that the trainers are sure we know everything!

The second lecture was much more interesting, all about ‘potentially dangerous critters’ – spiders, ticks, scorpions, snakes, centipedes, bees, beetles and mosquitoes, some of the different types, the harm they can cause you, how to identify them and how to avoid them. We also touched on crocodiles, hyenas, elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards and honey badgers. Apparently even though everything is electric fenced in, they don’t always work and pretty much all of those animals or at least their tracks have been seen in the camp at some point!

After this lecture it was time for brunch – a pasta salad, chicken nuggets, melon and pineapple – it was really good, I was so full afterwards.

Brunch was followed by a camp walk around, we were shown ‘officially’ where everything is and told our duty groups and the duties that we have to do. We were taken to the ‘tip’, the volleyball court, the braai (BBQ) area, where the main light switch is, the trainer’s huts, the washing machine and washing line area. There are three duty groups, pool and classroom duty, kitchen and dish duty and bin duty. There is also a camp leader, which changes every week, and a group leader, which also changes every week. This week I’m on kitchen and dish duty. Gerald also told us about his new venture – the ‘LSSD’ shop – which stands for ‘Lekker (Afrikaans for like/nice/good) Smokes Snacks And Drinks’. It will be open tomorrow and sell all sorts of snacks and drinks for us.

We had a bit of free time and I read through my notes from this morning and downloaded a few kindle books. I dangled my feet in the pool for a bit and chatted to everyone.

At about 1600 we gathered for a braai. We met Kim (sales and marketing managed) and Sophie (the director) and her children. Whilst sitting around the fire we had to introduce ourselves and tell our ‘stories’. When I was talking to Kim afterwards she told me about the possibility of doing a coastal placement and maybe being able to combine this course and diving! How amazing would that be?! Then it was food time. There was sausages, steak, corn on the cob, salad and dauphinois potatoes. Then something called milk pudding for dessert, which was really yummy.

We sat around for a while chatting and then I went to bed around 2200.
