The Lord is sovereign: It is right to be subject to God; mortals should not think that they are equal to God

Wisdom is necessary for everyone, but especially for powerful men such as kings, the Bible explains, and an example of this was the life of Antiochus IV, a staunch enemy of the Jews.
Antiochus IV, was a king who spread Hellenism throughout his kingdom and this soon came into conflict with the followers of the law of Moses, Antiochus IV behaved like a true tyrant and never showed any compassion towards those he considered his enemies. Faced with this, Judah Maccabee, a pious and devoted man of God, led a rebellion against the hellenizers and achieved important victories in the holy land against the Seleucid dynasty.
The second Book of Maccabees tells us how God punished Antiochus IV with a cruel death for his inhuman cruelty and inordinate pride: "But the all-seeing Lord, the God of Israel, struck him with an incurable and invisible blow" 2 Maccabees 9:5. As a result of this, only at the end of his days the King could reason, leaving his pride behind, entrusting himself to God: "It is right to be subject to God; mortals should not think that they are equal to God" 2 Maccabees 9:12. But this apparent remorse, which only responded to his need to improve his poor state of health, did not prevent his sad fate.
All these sad historical facts are a reminder of an important teaching of King Solomon in his Book of Wisdom, the Lord is the only sovereign; and men, even the most powerful, if they want to reach the end of their days in peace and blessed from above, must cultivate the science of wisdom and compassion towards the weakest, the need to live in the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion) is not something in vain or useless:
"You are merely stewards of his kingdom. If you don't judge rightly, if you don't keep the Law, or if you don't act according to God's plan, then he'll fall upon you very suddenly and very terribly. Judgment falls hard on those in high places. Those who aren't important may be pardoned out of compassion, but the powerful will be powerfully examined" Wisdom 6:4-6.
