Today I learned about the "Jewish Autonomous Oblast" in the Soviet Union. The Autonomous Jewish District is located in the Russian Far East and was established in 1934 as an autonomous territory for the Jews of the Soviet Union. Among other things, the autonomous district was established to prevent the emigration of Jews to Palestine, because Zionism was contrary to the Marxist ideology.
As of 2010, 176,558 people live in the autonomous Jewish district, of which only 1,628 are Jews (less than one percent).
