2022 is going to have some amazing events. The James Webb telescope alone would be enough. But the spectacular failures that surely lie ahead for Starship and SuperHeavy booster will be epic.
I think they'll eventually get it right, but safely catching the returning booster by having it hover near the launch tower while moving arms slide under the grid fins...OMG.
First, it has to be in just the right position. And it has to be perfectly vertical and with no lateral motion. Finally, the arms have to get under the grid fins without putting pressure on the hull. Normally, the hull gets most of its strength from the filled fuel and oxygen tanks. But on landing, those tanks will be empty, making it more like an eggshell.
This is at least as ambitious as the first attempts at landing a booster. I'll be amazed if the first four aren't all disasters. Should be one hell of a blooper reel when they finally get it right.
