In Spanish "este" and "esto" are demonstrative pronouns, they function is to identify the time and place of existence or occurrence of the referred topic, the difference between "este" and "esto" is that the former is used when the subject's gender is masculine and the later when the subject's gender is unspecified or it has no gender at all. Hope this might satisfy your question xD
