Comenzamos nuestro trayecto con Nausicaä del valle del viento. Basado en el manga de título homónimo publicado en 1982 por el famoso animador, guionista y productor japonés Hayao Miyazaki, es la adaptación cinematográfica dirigida por el propio Miyazaki y producida por Isao Takahata, ambos fundadores de Studio Ghibli.

Aunque no es estrictamente la primera película del estudio, lo cierto es que el éxito tanto en crítica como audiencia de este filme, así como la buena relación entre el común dúo Miyazaki-Takahata, propició la fundación de un estudio que supera ligeramente la veintena de películas en la actualidad.

Para los iniciados en el mundo Ghibli, enamorados de películas como La tumba de las luciérnagas, El viaje de Chihiro o El castillo ambulante, no encontrareis en Nausicaä del Valle del Viento esa fantasía poética a veces abstracta típica de Miyazaki ni el costumbrismo hipnótico que atribuimos a los filmes de Takahata, aunque sí empezaremos a ver brotes de esos estilos, iniciando con esta película la magia de un estudio que iría contracorriente en lo que a animación se refiere.

La película nos traslada a un mundo post-apocalíptico, mil años después de que una guerra mundial que ha dejado el planeta a merced de la contaminación y los gases tóxicos. Polución que ha propiciado la formación de un bosque de vegetación e insectos mutantes llamado Mar de Putrefacción. Un hábitat mortalmente nocivo para el ser humano y que se extiende sin control hacia las pocas áreas habitables a través de las esporas que expulsa la flora radiotrófica que contamina todo lo que toca.

En este contexto medioambiental se encuentra el Valle del Viento, un pequeño reino agrícola rodeado por potencias mucho más grandes y militarizadas donde vive Nausicaä, la carismática princesa de este reino donde han aprendido a convivir con la contaminación y los insectos. Una heroína que luchará fieramente a favor de la naturaleza y en contra de la guerra.

Una trama bastante densa que peca de sobredosis de información en sus dos horas de metraje, fruto de la adaptación forzosa de un manga cuyo extenso contenido bien podría dar para varias películas. Densa que no incomprensible ni aburrida como algunos califican esta obra, aunque sí es cierto que por la naturaleza adulta de su argumento se aleja bastante del publico infantil en comparación con anteriores trabajos del dúo Miyazaki-Takahata como Heidi, Marco o Ana la de las tejas verdes.

Rebosante de acción, el argumento se construye –como en un anime tradicional– sobre personajes no carentes de carisma pero que se aplanan en cierta forma –a diferencia del manga– para realzar el heroísmo de la protagonista, que sobresale del resto desempeñando un rol que enamora por su personalidad dulce y tenaz. Sin olvidar a los Ohms, insectos sobre los que gira la historia que logran encandilar sin necesidad de texto ni expresión.

Tanto la dirección artística como la fotografía no llegan al nivel de las películas posteriores al la fundación del estudio, donde libres de ataduras pudieron crear obras originales sin límites a la creatividad. La obra sigue luciendo el inconfundible estilo de un Miyazaki que en estos momentos su talento supera a sus medios. Se aprecia cierto abuso de los tonos pastel y algunos otros detalles que notaremos por estar malacostumbrados a su estilo artístico. Pero en todo caso no es justo calificar negativamente este aspecto por no igualar una animación cronológicamente posterior que todos tenemos como referencia.

Analizando la animación de los 80 como marco contextual, descubrimos en esta obra de Miyazaki fotogramas para enmarcar, si bien la animación se mantiene estable y aceptable durante gran parte del metraje, en ocasiones rompe con micro-explosiones de arte Ghibli que te dejan asombrando. Cabe destacar la escena final que combina un dibujo exquisito y una música excelente.

We begin our journey with Nausicaä from the valley of the wind. Based on the homonymous title manga published in 1982 by the famous Japanese animator, screenwriter and producer Hayao Miyazaki, is the film adaptation directed by Miyazaki himself and produced by Isao Takahata, both founders of Studio Ghibli.

Although it is not strictly the first film of the studio, the truth is that the success of both the critics and the audience of this film, as well as the good relationship between the common duo Miyazaki-Takahata, led to the foundation of a study that slightly exceeds the score of movies today.

For those initiated in the Ghibli world, in love with films like The Tomb of the Fireflies, The Spirited Away or The Traveling Castle, you will not find in Nausicaa del Valle del Viento that sometimes abstract poetic fantasy typical of Miyazaki or the hypnotic costumbrismo that we attribute to the films of Takahata, although we will begin to see outbreaks of those styles, starting with this film the magic of a study that would go against the current as far as animation is concerned.

The film takes us to a post-apocalyptic world, a thousand years after a world war that left the planet at the mercy of pollution and toxic gases. Pollution that has led to the formation of a vegetation forest and mutant insects called the Putrefaction Sea. A habitat that is deadly harmful to humans and that spreads uncontrollably to the few habitable areas through the spores that expel the radiotrophic flora that contaminates everything it touches.

In this environmental context is the Valley of the Wind, a small agricultural kingdom surrounded by much larger and militarized powers where lives Nausicaä, the charismatic princess of this kingdom where they have learned to coexist with pollution and insects. A heroine who will fight fiercely in favor of nature and against war.

A very dense plot that sins of overdose of information in its two hours of footage, fruit of the forced adaptation of a manga whose extensive content could well give to several films. Dense that not incomprehensible or boring as some qualify this work, although it is true that the adult nature of his argument is far from the children's audience compared to previous works of the Miyazaki-Takahata duo as Heidi, Marco or Ana the tiles green.

Brimming with action, the plot is built -as in a traditional anime- on characters not lacking in charisma but flattening themselves in a certain way - unlike manga - to enhance the heroism of the protagonist, who stands out from the rest by playing a role that falls in love with his sweet and tenacious personality. Without forgetting the Ohms, insects on which the story revolves that they manage to dazzle without the need of text or expression.

Both artistic direction and photography do not reach the level of the films subsequent to the founding of the studio, where free of constraints they were able to create original works without limits to creativity. The work continues to bear the unmistakable style of a Miyazaki who at this moment his talent exceeds his means. There is some abuse of the pastel colors and some other details that we will notice because they are ill-used to their artistic style. But in any case it is not fair to qualify this aspect negatively for not matching a chronologically posterior animation that we all have as a reference.

Analyzing the animation of the 80s as a contextual framework, we discovered in this work of Miyazaki frames to frame, although the animation remains stable and acceptable for much of the footage, sometimes it breaks with micro-explosions of Ghibli art that leave you amazed. Note the final scene that combines an exquisite drawing and excellent music.
