On average we use 2 - 4 'filler' words like 'erm' 'like' 'y 'know,' for every 100 words we speak, which reduces the potency and value of our sentences, especially in professional environments. Additionally, filler words have the unfortunate capabilities of making a speaker be perceived as unprofessional and even awkward at times.

The Clap Method

Now this method may sound insane at first but it is effective. Get somebody close to you, to always clap when you use filler words. This effectively, makes you conscious to how often you use filler words, and what context of conversations do you use filler words most. Individuals, even may be able to acknowledge what emotional state they are in when using the most filler words. Understanding your relationship with a habit you want to irradiate is always the first step; The Clap Method is an effective approach for this.

The Self - Recording Method

Now, some individuals may feel uncomfortable asking another to clap everytime they use a filler word. Another approach is recording yourself in conversation and playing back for the same analysis as the Clapping Method.

How to fix it

The reason why people use 'filler' words is simply to make time for their thoughts to manifest. How to fix this bad habit is too substitute filler words with pauses.
An incredible and successful speaking coach, Paula Statman states. "It's a matter of having to train yourself to tolerate a long pause, with the belief that you will not lose the audiences respect or attention."

One further reason people use filler words is to conceal the anxiety they feel inside whilst speaking. Therefore, it is important to manage your anxiety. One effective way is by shifting your mentality to how your using your words to entice the audience rather than focusing how the audience will perceive them.

Just like any habit, practice makes perfect. You will not eradicate your filler words over night, but with repetition with the methods above ..you will be soon admired for your ability to captivate an audience.

Great advice! Try this: the next time you feel the need to use 'filler' words don't and make a wait for it ... a pause. Yes, let that uncomfortable silence sink in, not only you will captivate your audience more by pausing at specific points but it will also give you time to think about what you are saying and come up with a way to say it better.

Also, try to slow down when talking, like really slooooww downn. You are probably talking way to fast which reeks of insecurity.

I completely agree! I feel when people speak too fast they do not allow the audience to soak in the content. It is important how you speak as often content is perceived in the manner it is articulated
