St Andrew's Cross Spider

in spiders •  7 years ago

Finding this wonderful looking spider in the bananas I knew it was called a St Andrew's Cross (Argiope keyserlingi) here in Australia, they certainly have other names in other places but being in Aus atm, I decided on this name for my blog. They get the name by resting in the web with legs outstretched in the shape of an X, the cross of St. Andrew. The alrge white web is called the stabilimentum or web decoration. Thet are non-aggresive spiders and are low risk (non toxic) to humans.
