The Sacred Scriptures in the Book of Genesis tell us that God did not create death for man, but that death was the fruit of sin, and this is so because sin is a break in the relationship with the creator of the universe. When God created paradise and men lived in harmony, God warned man: "But God did say, ´You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die" Genesis 3:3.
In a strict sense, according to the Book of Genesis, God created man endowed with immortality, but because of Eve's sin, death entered into the world. And then came the first patriarchs of humanity like Methuselah and Enoch, and the book of Genesis tells us that they had very long lives, around a thousand years.
The Book of Genesis also explains us that humanity grew and that human beings were dispersed throughout the earth and with this, evil also increased, so God because of this sad fact decided to shorten the days of mankind: "My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years" Genesis 6:2.
With all this the Bible is giving us a very clear spiritual message, if we break our natural filiation with that creative and eternal wisdom we cannot expect a long life, sin only bears the fruit of death and suffering.
The sapiential books, like the Book of Wisdom, and this perhaps due to the influence of other ancient cultures, tell us about the gift of immortality in another sense, as longevity. And about this the Book of Wisdom tells us: "Immortality will bring you close to God" Wisdom 6:19.
The path to the wisdom of God is a blessing for man, and whoever finds good also finds true happiness and life in every sense, this is the deepest message of the sacred texts because meeting God is finding immortality.
