The Book of Wisdom of Ben Sira in the Bible among its teachings highlights that through the temptation of Adam in Paradise, sin entered into the world, and with it death. In a very subtle way, Ben Sira taught that the spiritual gift of wisdom is necessary, and more than anything in the face of death.
Vain are the hopes of those who sin, Ben Sira taught, because those who follow the path of error live dominated by their passions, guilt, envy, hate, and in particular the fear of death. And no one escapes this, whether poor or rich, wealth is useless in the face of human destiny; and the wise man emphasized, death makes all men equal. The fear of death frightens those who lack the equanimity that comes from wisdom.
In this way, Ben Sira reflected on those who stray from the path of God, that is, the path of righteousness, on those who are metaphorically "the children of Adam", that man who, created by God, was not responsible for his lack:
"A great anxiety has God allotted,
and a heavy yoke, to the children of Adam,
from the day they leave their mother's womb
until the day they return to the mother of all the living.
Trouble thoughts and fear of heart are theirs
and anxious foreboding until death.
Whether one sits on a lofty throne
or grovels in dust and ashes.
Whether one wears a splendid crown
or is clothed in the coarsest of garments" Ben Sira 40:1-4.
And those who live according to this dangerous path have their just reward; the law of sowing and reaping is a universal law of balance and retribution that acts on both, righteous men and sinful men:
"Come plague and bloodshed, fiery heat and drought,
plunder and ruin, famine and death.
For the wicked evil was created,
and because of them destruction hastens" Ben Sira 40:9-10.
That is why the wise man concluded his teaching with a spiritual principle, reminiscent of the teachings of Christ, and that invites to reflection:
"All that is of earth returns to earth,
and what is from above returns above" Ben Sira 4:11.
What is relative to the body has a certain life, but the soul and spirit of men that are immortal and who belong to God, return to him.
