The Bible teaches us that the ability to reflect on our decisions is what makes a man sensible, on the other hand, acting recklessly or rather out of passion, without properly evaluating the risks in decision-making, is what makes the man an impious and lacking in all practical prudence.
This is why the master of wisdom Ben Sira in his book warned us of this problem with a spiritual truth: "Sensible people will consider every opinion, but arrogant people will let nothing stand in their way" Ben Sira 32:18.
In the Bible there are many cases of how the lack of reflection led to great disasters. When it is calculated that people act only out of fear or greed, that is when big mistakes are made; many times love, honor, or the sense of moral duty drive people to perform great acts, like when David defeated Goliath. There is a flexible thought and a rigid thought, and wisdom invites us to look for the former.
We live in a progressive universe, and human actions are subject to ethical laws, and whoever does not know how to listen is exposed to the worst mistakes: "For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind." Hosea 8:7, "Do not sow in the furrows of injustice, lest you harvest it sevenfold," Ben Sira 7:3.
And the Bible gives us a simple example of this, when King Solomon's son assumed the throne, Rehoboam, he did not know how to listen to the good advice of the elders and this led to the division between the Kingdoms of Judah and Israel in the assembly of Shechem.
A heart hardened by passions makes a man stumble, and those who follow their fleeting desires at any cost have no security in life, the wise Ben Sira taught us with a wise quote: "The senseless have vain and false hopes, and dreams give wings to fools" Ben Sira 34:1. We have to choose between wisdom and error.
