The Apostle John in his third letter highlights the importance of hospitality towards brothers in need as a sign of spiritual communion. The spiritual communion, the ethical or correct order of human society, is the opposite of favoritism and oppression, because according to what Jesus taught, those who want to be first must become last in front of their brothers: "So the last will be first, and the first will be last" Matthew 20:16. Communion is how our Lord Jesus wants christians to live.
The apostle John wrote his letter especially, probably addressed to a community in Asia Minor, because there were two contrasting figures: Gaius, the person to whom the letter was addressed, a person full of mercy (compassion, gentleness) and fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion), and who helped with a good heart the missionaries sent by John to spread the word of God; and a certain Diotrephes who was a dictatorial and oppressive person whose goal was to have total control of his community.
These two people mentioned in the letter, Gaius and Diotrephes, show us the difference between the spiritual people that seek truth and love and build bridges to his neighbor, and the mundane people that only seek power at all costs, and build walls.
The apostle John set Gaius as an example of what it means to live the word of the Lord in spiritual communion; putting all the material goods in common, and especially at the service of those who preach the word of God:
"Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters, even though they are strangers to you. They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way in a manner that honors God. It was for the sake of the Name that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans. We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth" 3 John 1:5-8.
