The opposition between righteousness and sin is a constant teaching in the gospels, because they are two opposite paths that have nothing in common, like oil and vinegar that can't mix. And about this a teacher of wisdom warned us: "Is a wolf ever allied with a lamb? So the sinner with the righteous" Ben Sira 13:17.
Accepting our Lord Jesus with the heart is not a question of masks or appearances, it is accepting a cross: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me" Matthew 16:24; because in a world where selfishness is the only valid way out in life, mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) and rectitude do not fit.
Faced with the need of our neighbor, the most common response is: Am I going to worry about your life when I have to do mine? The lack of empathy is a very harsh response.
That is why one of the most important tasks of the adult Christian is the spiritual rehabilitation of the oppressed, of the hopeless, of those who see everything wrong and cannot find a way out: "Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow." Isaiah 1:17.
That is why the apostle John taught us about the importance of following the right path and avoiding the sin that leads us to ruin: "Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous" 1 John 3:12.
That is why the apostle concluded that a righteous life implies living alert and attentive to each situation, because we live in a world hostile to the truth and looking for beautiful lies: "Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you" 1 John 3:13.
