There is the present moment and the current experience.
These two things are often confused.
The present moment Is. Just like awareness, it is purely neutral to whatever momentary experience is passing through it. It is neither blissful nor frightening; it just Is.
The current experience is how you are experiencing life right now. That experience is ever shifting.
But we human beings have A LOT of preferences about what experiences we want passing through the present moment. Those preferences are another way to talk about attachments. When we don't like the experience, we resist, and that resistance makes us suffer.
We have many different forms of resistance, but for this post, let's look at impatience, boredom, and anxiety.
Impatience
One simple sign of resistance is impatience. Impatience is part of how we say, "I wish another experience that I enjoy would get here soon!" In many respects, it is low-level form of readying yourself to take an action.
Tune into your breathing and your body.
Are you holding your breath?
Are you holding subtle tension in your body?
If you are, notice them, and breathe to relax again.
Boredom
Boredom is another sign of resistance. It's a way that we say, "I want more stimulation."
In a culture that is already over-stimulated, getting used to boredom is helpful in detoxing from too many stimulating experiences. We need to come back to rest. It's necessary for us to be healthy.
But we have to be willing to be with the experience of boredom. Too often, people find another form of stimulation to get their next fix and avoid the feelings of boredom and whatever else may come up.
Anxiety
There are many reasons for anxiety, but one of the reasons is that people don't feel like the present moment is safe. They are anxious to get to another experience.
Once again, tune into your body. Notice what is happening there. Surrender to the experience of anxiety while breathing and consciously relaxing your body.
