The Psalm 119 is a hymn dedicated to the study and praise of the law of Moses, and this song as a sapiential text begins by teaching something very important, the law given on Mount Horeb begins in the hearts of men. And this understanding is fundamental and the basis of the true spirituality of the Bible, the law of Moses is not related with the accomplishment of the ten commandments as many apparent Christians suppose, the law of Moses is summarized in a very simple text: "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man" Ecclesiastes 12:13. The fear of God is a grace, a perfection of the human heart, and also one of the most profound instructions of the sacred texts, the gift of fear of God is constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity.
This is why the Psalm begins with these wise words that invite to an interesting spiritual reflection:
"I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you" Psalm 119:10-11.
And this devotion required by the law of Moses is translated into another important statement in the Psalm:
"In the way of your testimonies I delight
as much as in all riches" Psalm 119:14.
There is no greater wealth for man than knowing the ways of God taught with wisdom in the song, and a practical example of this was the great king Solomon, who as he grew in this way of God, the Lord added the glory, immortality, and all material riches. The truly intelligent man understands this spiritual teaching with his mind and heart and is not deceived by apparent goods. The Bible calls and invites men with its wisdom to the sensible life, the good, beautiful, and happy life.
