The #1 Misconception About Law of Attraction

in spirituality •  6 years ago

A lot of people use "spirituality" as a way to avoid life. Life is scary, I know.

But you're fully capable of handling it when your relationship with your higher self is very strong. Your emotions are your guideposts to tell you what your relationship with your infinite self is at this moment. But many people who study law of attraction do one or two or both of these things:

  1. Gloss over and lie to themselves ie:
  • "My husband divorced me - gotta keep on keepin' on. Just plaster a smile on my face."
  • "My mother died, but it's ok. Death is part of life!" - Do you really feel that, or are you scared to feel pain, and law of attraction is your excuse not to feel it?
  1. Feel guilty for feeling sad or angry or disappointed. Unfortunately, this is extremely common for deliberate creators, myself included.

Most people beat themselves up when they experience an emotion like despair or sadness. They think they “should” be feeling hope or joy. Our emotions are our guideposts so that we can know where we are so that we can get to where we want to be in life. Fear is the signal that says, "you're not thinking about this the same way your infinite self sees this. You're off the track to where you want to be." So do you condemn the fear and condemn yourself for feeling the fear and then distract yourself and plaster on a smile and state affirmations? No.

Step 1. Acknowledge
Step 2. Feel
Step 3. Soothe

That's power.

If you’re going around condemning your negative emotions like fear, then you’re stuck. And if you ignore your negative emotions and you spiritual bypass and you tell yourself that you just feel great, well then you’re quite lost.

You’re not here to feel great all the time. You wouldn’t get anywhere if you did. The rich experience of life is all about the ups and the downs: the deaths and the sickness and the loss, and also the hope and the wealth and the fun and the laughing and the falling in love, and all the myriad experiences the living of life brings. Do you know how boring life would be if you felt good all the time? You wouldn’t even feel good, because without the reverse experience of also feeling bad, you would actually feel quite numb. Feeling joyful wouldn’t feel like anything. You could say there would be no feelings at all without the bad feeling feelings.

You have to be real with yourself about how you feel and honor yourself by honoring those emotions.

You have to stop trying to be perfect or good.

Are you basing your value on how good you feel and how perfect of a manifestor you are? There’s no measuring stick you have to compare yourself to. You’re perfect and whole, and your life experience is perfect, too. It’s perfect for you.

Glossing over unpleasant emotions and plastering on a smile results in illness. It's much more manageable to acknowledge your feelings now and work with them. This is empowerment. This is wholeness. If you don't focus on where you really are and how you really feel, then you're only a shell of a human, and you're not really living life. Life is scary, I know. But you can excel at it and have a really rich experience by honoring yourself and being true to yourself by appreciating all your emotions.

So what is the #1 misconception about Law of Attraction? That unpleasant emotions are bad.

That is a very healthy way to look at negativity. Acknowledge the pain and sadness you are feeling or it will come back when you least expect it. Great insights @brightstar!

It sure will!

Thanks for coming by @mrscwin. See you around!

Great post. This ideology is rampant in society and has very negative effects.

The idea that simply thinking about something will make it happen is ludicrous. The law of attraction requires action to create the cycle of cause an effect. It is a very common misconception and people often don't even realize that action was taken to set events in motion, assuming reality is willed into existence.

Just like chaos is a teacher, unpleasant emotions can lead to a better understanding of one's self and one's relationship to others and the world.

Hi @anarcoaahabb

This post doesn’t refute the existence of law of attraction. It just clarifies a misconception that students of loa teachings hold.

It’s extremely common for people to say loa is bullshit because action is required. Precisely the opposite. The teachings do not state that action isn’t required. It teaches INSPIRED action. It teaches HOW to take PROPER action and not set yourself back by working against yourself. It’s mindset FIRST, THEN action. Not just blind, frivolous action. I will probably write a post on this, too.

I'm not refuting the existence either. Sorry I wasn't very clear about that. I think it exists, but I just don't think that simply thinking bad thoughs will make bad things happen or thinking good thoughts will make good things happen. This seems to be the inclination with a lot of people.

I'm not familiar with loa teachings but it sounds interesting and, from the way you describe it, very much in line with common sense. Think before you act. I can definitely get behind that.

I will look into loa and I look forward to possibly reading your future post on the subject.

Oh, good! It's probably my most written about topic! See you around, new friend.

"They think they “should” be feeling hope or joy."

You are right that we are of a similar mind on this issue. We have our "negative" emotions for a reason and they do serve a vital purpose for us. I used this example earlier today but it works here: If we sit around feeling good about everything, we will smile while our house burns down around us. Those emotions often drive us to take action and actually work to make things better.
