Newgrange megalithic tomb... Part III

in spirituality •  7 years ago  (edited)

The best place to observe the "rebirth of the sun" on the Winter Solstice is at the Newgrange Megalithic tomb located in the Boyne Valley in County Meath, Ireland.

The 19 metre long passage and chamber of Newgrange are illuminated at the time of the Winter Solstice sunrise. As the sun begins to rise, a shaft of sunlight enters the small box shaft over the entrance and travels along the passage to light up the chamber. This dramatic event usually lasts for approximately 17 minutes at dawn on the day of the Solstice, and the few mornings before and after.

So many visitors come, that admission into the chamber is by lottery only. Applications are taken in September, the successful applicants are informed in October. Out of around 30,000 only 50 are chosen, each able to bring one person with them. Each of the mornings around the Solstice 10 lottery winners and their guests are allowed entrance into the chamber.

Newgrange is a World Heritage centre attracting over 200,000 each year.

Inside the chamber there are stone carvings often recognised as Irish Celtic symbols...although they were carved at least 2500 years before the Cells even reached Ireland. These carvings are approximately 30cms in diameter...much smaller than the tri-spiral design on the entrance stone.

Perhaps one one day you too may visit Newgrange.

NEVER beg for upvotes.

Lovely post about a beautiful site! I went to Newgrange for Winter Solstice 2012. There was a big conscious all night party there to celebrate that date, we had all been waiting for, for a long time. Remember? Tomorrow I shall go to Glastonbury to celebrate the solstice. Happy Solstice Katdvine and Spiritual Steemians :)

Thank you for your lovely feedback. A very blessed Solstice to you, and have a great meaningful celebration at Glastonbury. I have never been to Glastonbury. 😀

It's a magical place! One of my spiritual homes. I also went to Stanton Drew stone circle yesterday, which is a very special secret. I will write a post about it soon :)

I'm looking forward to your post. 😊

I find this kind of thing absolutely fascinating. When one thinks of the time, effort and resources that must have gone into building these monuments it is truly staggering.

Those that are picked in the lottery are very lucky to get to experience such an event. It would just be my luck that if I were picked it would be the wettest, dullest, least sunny morning for years!

Yes, it is a bit hit and miss....the last couple of years it was too misty for the sun to light the chamber. Also because of a slight tilt in the axis of earth's rotation, slightly less light enters.

People tend to think that intelligence evolved over time, but this megalithic tomb was constructed using measurement. Amazing. And it took many years to construct.

I also found it fascinating that it is older than Stonehenge and the Giza pyramids.

Yes, you're right. People forget how ancient these monuments actually are. Our ancestors were a lot smarter than we tend to give them credit for.
