For the 7th edition of the Run&Bike by SMO-Specialized the industry zone near Eeklo was revisited after several years. It was a sunny day and the real-feel temperature was more than pleasant, which lead to a staggering 120 duo’s at the headquarters of SMO-Specialized Triathlon Teams main sponsor SMO. The participants were treated with a very diverse course containing fast stretches, wooden obstacles, sandy sections, technical intermezzos and bobbly meadows. Tactics would be crucial in this multisport discipline where there are two competitors for one bike and relays may happen as often as they want.

First up were more than 50 children between the ages 6 and 12. After the effort, all of them were treated with a remembrance medal and a pancake. Soon they were followed by the participants of the Small edition (5km), where Raf De Dobbelaere (SMO-Specialized) and Mart Claus were victorious. Duos Johannes Metsu, Senne Van der Meersche and Claude Bauwens, Wouter Detemmerman took silver and bronze.

The XL-edition (16km) is traditionally known for its strong field. This year was not an exception. 3MD team Vincent Van de Walle and Pamphiel Paryn took the win, first home team duo was Eskill De Witte and Bart Borghs on 6th place.

In the mixed teams Frank Kivereyn (SP&O) and Stefanie Adam (3MD) were the fastest, overall they ended in 24th position. The ladies ranking was won by 3MD as well, with Frauke Timmerman and Sofie Van den Ponseele.

Out of the comfortzone

“A spicy winter peak for all multisporters in the region, ideal to shake up the hibernation and to get them out of their comfortzone. We have seen a vigorous race in all categories. It pleased me to see the number of children participating in the event, an alternative race format in duo. Families as well as companies also found their way to this challenge. We would like to thank our partners, the city council as well as the volunteers for this successful edition.” said race president Frank Oosterlinck.

Next organization by SMO-Specialized will the traditional Boerekreektriatlon. It will be pushed forward in the calendar, taking place on May 20th (Sunday).
