When Patrick Mahomes got his ten year, half billion dollar contract, I thought that it would hinder the Chiefs, that it was foolish to dump so much money into one player regardless of how good he is, and that they'd be in cap hell.
Realistically, the two teams in the best long-term situation are the Chiefs and my Bills in that order.
With Lamar Jackson's deal, Josh Allen has the tenth highest cash flow over the next three years, and Mahomes has dropped to eleventh. The Chiefs have undoubtedly the best player in the NFL, and they're getting away with paying him the eleventh most. By next year, he'll drop thirteenth after Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert get their deals done.
The Mahomes deal, and probably the Josh Allen deal, were franchise saving, not franchise killing. The Deshaun Watson deal was franchise killing. The Kyler Murray deal is franchise killing.
Really, so long as Mahomes stays happy, and keeps with the Brady route of keeping his cap hit lower than most of the competitive quarterbacks in the league so the Chiefs can keep the roster stacked around him, the Chiefs are, and will be the next dynasty unless my Bills can finally get over the hump.
The amazing this is that the Chiefs are in this great place not just because they drafted the best player in the NFL, it's that they acquired a smart, forward thinking person.
