Yesterday the National Rugby League Commission announced that they were taking one of the three games of Rugby Leagues show case event the State of Origin to Adelaide in 2020. It is reported the South Australia Government would pay around 8 million dollars to host this event. Basically in Australia the State of Origin is the equivalent of the Super Bowl only there are 3 games a year and the same two teams play every year in what is a fierce interstate rivalry between Queensland and New South Wales. As a born and bred Queenslander I don’t know about selling these games off to other states as a bidding war where the tribalism of games in Brisbane or Sydney doesnt exist but the economics of the move make sense.
For those of you who have no idea about Australian sport or Rugby League these games have often been described as one of the most brutal you will see in one of the most crazy collision sports in the World, it captivates the entire country three times a year and rivals the fanaticism seen in supporters in football throughout Europe and South America. If you ever get a chance to watch one of these games or are in Australia when they are on you must try and witness it live.
