Why I Stopped Caring so Much About Football

in sports •  7 years ago

Since the Superbowl is on right now, I thought this would be a good topic. However, I am not talking about the controversy with players kneeling during the national anthem. I am talking about my own mental health!

I have been a diehard Denver Bronco fan my entire life. When I was a kid I used to cry when they lost. I would get so upset whenever they did not play well, even if they won! When they did win, well that was what they were supposed to do every week.

What did I do to change my attitude about football

In my 20s I became much more aware of how my attitude and choices affected my success. I believe a positive attitude makes us happy and more successful. One of the biggest causes of worry, anxiety, and happiness was football! Something that did not affect my life at all and something I had no control over.

I was getting upset over football, and the only way I was happy was if the Broncos won the Superbowl. There are 32 teams in the NFL and only one team can win it all. I have about a 3 percent chance of being happy each year. How dumb is that?

I learned to let go. If the Broncos do awesome, I am happy. If they do bad, I may be annoyed, but I stop myself from getting mad. I think about the things in my life that really matter. My family, my work, my friends, things I can touch, talk to, and interact with. I get as much joy out of football as I did in the past, but I eliminated much if the distress.

One of the biggest things I did was to turn off the TV if I get mad. I stop watching and I do something else. It is easy to do and makes me so much happier!

Any other crazy fans out there?

For me, football was a way to meet people. I moved to Seattle not knowing anyone and not being particularly interested in football. After getting invited to a party by my roommate on a Saturday night and invited to watch football with the same guys the next day, I had found a social circle to join. From there, I became more and more interested in the sport because it gave me a way to make friends and stay in touch as life took us in our separate directions. When I was overseas for 3 years, football became a great way to feel connected to that same group.... then fantasy football became a way to bond further... by giving each other crap on a weekly basis!

Yeah, I think it has its positives for sure., I play fantasy football as well and it is a blast.

Ive never cared to much about football. The commercials are the best to watch tho!!

I feel like the commercials used to be better.

LOLOL!!! I have never been a fan of Football! Too much time, money, and energy wasted on something that will have absolutely no effect on my life or success!! Too many people both financially & emotionally overly invested in a GAME!!! Honestly, I have got way more important things to do!

It can be fun to watch, but I agree people get too wrapped up in it.

I follow football (English) quite a lot and my teams performance in the gameweek has a lot of effect on my mood. However I don't let that get to me to the point that it affects other tasks. I'm equally happy when it wins which motivates me to do things that won't be possible otherwise. So I got that going for me, which is nice.

That is good. I know it was an unequal balance for me!

I thought this was a good game but I think Americans do waste too much time and money on their football circus

Yeah, I can see that perspective

You quit caring about football so much you wrote an entire article on it lmao 😂

I still like it, I just don't let it bother me as much

Thanks @investfourmore. Yes, being a Tennessee Alumni I can relate to your football distress.

It can be rough. I too turn off the Tube when things go south for the Vols.

And lately I have been turning that power switch off a whole lot lol
