A lot of people seem to think that in every basketball game, the refs should call an even number of fouls on each team, and calling more fouls on one team means the reffing was unfair.
But teams simply have no way to stop Edey without pushing, shoving, and grabbing his arms. Give sympathy to the poor guys trying to defend this 7'4" behemoth! They're doing their best, but fouling him is necessary. He's surely the most fouled college player in the country. And to keep the game from looking truly ridiculous, the refs aren't calling every foul he receives.
On the defensive end, he's very controlled, so he doesn't commit many fouls. And some teams - like Tennessee yesterday - are going to try to win by taking most shots from distance instead of trying to get inside against such a big guy. So there won't be as many opportunities for him to commit fouls.
I think the hate may come from his un-athletic appearing style of play. He lumbers more than he soars. So people think he can't be that good. So they attribute his success to a non-existent favoritism from the refs.
Or they attribute it solely to his height, forgetting that not all big men are able to drop as many points as he is. Edey's season average of 25 points and 12 rebounds per game tops the legendary Ralph Sampson's (also 7' 4") senior year averages of 19 and 11. That's good company.
The guy gets mauled every game and never loses his composure.
