Ben Hogan played his last PGA tournament at age 58, in 1971. It was just down the street from me, at Champions Golf Club, a new course made by his friends Jimmy Demaret and Jackie Burke Jr.(Burke passed away very recently, after living past his 100th birthday.). Hogan was appearing as a favor to his old friends.
He aggravated an injury in the first round, and had to walk off. A quiet end to a magnificent career.
Later that evening he joined a gin rummy game in the locker room. A man walked up to him and said, “You might not remember me, but we played golf together back in 1958."
Ben replied, "You're right. I don't remember you." Upon which he turned around and went back to his game.
Hogan was famously... unapproachable.
