Iga Swiatek quietly ties world record for consecutive wins

I wouldn't say that I fully pay attention to tennis. I have a look at it every now and then and while I had heard the name before I wasn't very familiar with who world number 1, Iga Swiatek actually is.

Turns out she has just tied the world record for consecutive matches won and is on her way to beating this record as well as the total Grand Slam wins as well.

This kind of leads back to what I was ranting about the other day about people need to stop whining about equality in tennis because a casual fan like me didn't really even know who this person was, let alone that she is about to break all the records in the sport's history. The few matches of hers that I watched, including and especially the final in the French Open were very one sided victories. She didn't seem at all bothered by her final match against American Coco Gauff.

Gauff didn't look like she belonged there as she was dispatched very quickly in such a way that had me asking others in the room "are you sure this is the final?"

Iga made quick work of everyone she faced in the French Open with one exception being Chinese star Zheng Qinwen took the first set from her and shocked the tennis world. Iga quickly regrouped and won the next two sets 6-0, 6-2.

I am not a huge fan of this sport and especially not the women's side of things and this is amplified by the usual justice warriors coming out of the woodwork and suggesting that the sport is filled with sexism. However, it's kind of alarming to me that I hadn't even heard anything about Swiatek's streak until recently. It seems to me like that would be very big news.

Now here is the question I have for any die-hard fans of the sport out there. Is Iga Swiatek really that good or is there just a real lack of competition at the moment? She is on her way to defeating the records of both Serena and Venus Williams so I suppose its a good thing they made that Will Smith movie when they did.
