Panthers lose again. Still winless

Each week I get a spark of hope and each week I am let down. The Panthers slip to 0-5 and while nobody really gives the preseason much credibility it is important to note that they have lost all of those as well. The only regular season game where it looked as though they even had a chance was against New Orleans, who are also pretty bad but not as bad as the Panthers are.

This week they lost to the Detroit Lions, the second time that they have done so this season.

Bryce Young, who has to be one of the tiniest QB's in the history of the NFL, was back on the field this week and while I understand they invested a lot in the kid and it is his first year, I think that this is a mistake. I feel that once again the Panthers have squandered good positions in their draft picks, and that Young is going to be one of those QB's that isn't around for very long. To be fair to Young, he doesn't really have anyone to pass to outside of Adam Thielen, who was one ray of hope during the game vs Detroit. It doesn't really matter if these two are able to gel extremely well though, because the secondary with any team they play against is going to be watching Adam very closely since he is basically the only receiver with reliable hands.

Young managed to only throw two interceptions this game and if I was going to be positive about just one thing this game I suppose it would be that the offensive line for the Panthers managed to protect Young for a bit, and he was only sacked one time in the game.

Something I find kind of funny about these gambling websites is that they will give you real-time percentages of who is going to win the game and when you are playing against Carolina, the percentage chance of victory for you apparently starts at 75% and then just bops down to near 100% by half time.

Only 4% of global bets were on Carolina wining by either the Money Line straight bet (betting simply on a win, amount of points are irrelevant) and with an expected loss of 9.5 points (meaning the Lions would have to beat them by 10) only 22% of the bets were for the Panthers. Basically, everyone knew that Carolina was going to get their butts whooped and that is exactly what ended up happening.

I suppose you could say that I am happy for the Lions, because when Carolina was good, Detroit was basically in the role where Carolina finds themselves now, and had been that way for quite some time. I don't like for a bad team, especially a really old team like Detroit, to always be losing so if they can keep this momentum up for the remainder of the season, I would be really glad to see them do that.

One last thing to note is that a 24-42 loss doesn't seem that bad until you start to dig inside the numbers and realize that there is a certain point where one team gets so far ahead that they really let off the gas and don't really try 100% to score or even to prevent scoring. If Detroit had wanted to do so, I am quite certain they could have prevented 14 of the points that Carolina put on the board.

I don't watch all the games that happen every week so I don't know if Carolina is as of yet considered the worst team in the NFL. We are all but guaranteed another loss on the 16th of Oct though because the Panthers will be visiting Miami who many people believe are top contenders to go to the Super Bowl. The Vegas odds are still in their very early stages, but the straight bet on the Dolphins is already at -900.... meaning that a bet of $1000 will net you only a $100 profit. This is how absolutely certain the powers that be are that Carolina doesn't stand a chance in this game.

I may not even watch it... it has potential to be far too frustrating.
