War of Legions or Splinterlands?

In 2014 I started playing a RPG card game created by Korean's ATeam called War of Legions (WOL). It is still running to this day, but I no longer play the game. The main factors I stop playing are the teammates I had in my guild stopped playing and I could never profit from the game because selling cards were not allowed. I had played the game daily for almost four years until I lost interest. In this post I give a comparison between WOL and Splinterland and which one I believe is the better of the two games. (This post is written based on @splinterland's Weekly Curation Challenge.

I think this is a great comparison between Splinterland (SPT) and War of Legions (WOL) as SPT plans to enter the mobile app market, where WOL has and continues to succeed. Also by comparing the two games readers can see that the mechanics of both SPT and WOL are very similar.

Similarities & Differences...

In WOL there are Warriors and Monsters similar to SPT with Summoners and Monsters. Chart below listing the comparison between the two games.

SPT WOL
Summoners VS Warriors Water Elf/Dark Elf
Fire Dwarf/Orc
Life Human/Villain
Earth Gnome/Goblin
Death Spirit/Undead
Dragon -
Monsters No Categories Wyrm
- Mystic
- Predator
- Crawler
- Creation

There are also stats in both games that have similarities and differences.

SPT WOL
Attack Melee Attack Stat
Range -
Magic -
Defense Toughness Defense Stat
Health Health HP Stat

There is also attributes or skills in the cards in both games with various effects and buffs. In WOL the categories Earth, Fire, Water, Life, and Death comes into play in the skills, which makes for a lot of combinations. While in SPT there are (46) abilities that can be selected based on monsters. Both games are similar in that they allow summoners/warriors and monsters to level up and increase stats.

The limitation of which summoners/warriors and monsters to use in SPT is based on Mana numbers, while in WOL it is BP stat.

Battle Mechanics

In WOL players setup formations of five warriors to five monsters. There are combination bonuses such as using similar rarity cards, similar type of warriors/monsters, and similar elements. The summation of all monsters' attack, defense, and HP stats is the formations stats when going into battle. The bonus combinations is a percentage multiplier to the formation stats. The battle itself is in an instant. Much quicker than SPT, but rewards are not as lucrative. The winner in a battle for WOL only receives a portion of their losing opponent's gold. Gold in the game does not amount to much in value. While in SPT winners of battles receive DEC that can be used as a source of currency to better one self in the game or use it for other purposes outside the game.

In SPT players setup formations of one summoner and up to six monsters. There is no saved formations so each battle the player must build a formation from scratch. While in WOL players can save a few of their most commonly used formations. The stats in SPT are separate for each monster and so the attacks is per monster. Battles in SPT also occur in an instant, however because it is saved on the Steem blockchain users can replay their battle matches accordingly. WOL has no ability to archive battles.

In-game Purchases

In WOL players can buy jewels that in turn can be used to play events and earn special reward cards. There is also the opportunity to purchase card packs. All purchases must be in currency/ios or google app credits.

In SPT cryptocurrency is used to purchase card packs or individual cards. There is also the opportunity to purchase card packs with fiat currency. I am hoping once SPT has its mobile app out that app credits can be used to purchase card packs. This will in turn make a wide spread adoption of trading cryptocurrency through mobile game app! Also SPT has allow players to lend cards out to others to earn crypto. This feature will likely make the game a long term success as more players participate in the game and can earn rewards without having to play everyday.

Best Parts of Each Game?

In WOL there are daily guild battles where members of a legion has battles against other legions of similar rank throughout the day at a specific time schedule. The battles would not require player to be on to play, as there is an AI to play for them. However they earn less rewards if they do not log in to play. There is a total of 5 battles in a given day and each battle is limited to 30 minutes. The top guilds earn the most rewards such as jewels that can be used to purchase more cards.

While in SPT tournaments can last for a few hours and players individually earn their own rewards if they finish in the top ranks. The reward is a in-game currency that can be exchanged for cards, cryptocurrency, and even fiat currency! (There is no team effort in the battles, such as the likes of WOL so in the future if Splinterland can develop some sort of players versus players that would make the game even more intricate.)

Conclusions...

Each game has its pros and cons but since I have started playing splinterland I have yet to find a day to stop. I only wish I started sooner but better late than never. The battle mechanics in WOL are fun to play when it is multi players versus multi players. I hope SPT can learn from WOL and develop something similar where there is scheduled daily battles between guilds and winners earn DEC tokens.
