The crime of being a newbie; Project MitUp5

in stach •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hello, Steemians! I know the Project MitUp5 logo is cool, as cool as the Steemit platform itself. Simple, yet elegant! (I have no idea why it has refused to come up in this post).

I joined this community about October, 2017 and made no post until January 2. Matter-of-factly, it was my first visit to the site after registration (makes me wonder what progress I'd have made if I had started then). It was, nay still is, quite challenging to understand things on Steemit. That was the reason I shelved Steemit; because everything was a real opposite to the conventional social media platforms we know. We all know that understanding births growth, especially with this kind of opportunity.

The MitUp5 is a project geared towards training 5 new Steemians in the Uyo community. It is a new initiative, and this would be the first meet-up. I am excited to be part of the pioneer trainees. But you guessed that already.

This post, however, seeks to highlight the challenges I have faced as a new Steemian, or that I am still facing.

First of all (and most primarily), as a newbie, I get so lost in translation.

Someone says "Steem Power" or "SBD" and I'm like "say what!". I literally am drowning in a sea of vague terms.

Next is the problem of plagiarism. I mean, I literally didn't know there was a plagiarism bot. On one of my posts as a freshman, I just copied a news article! Lo and behold, @Cheetah upvoted. When I was told the implications, I almost slipped out of my skin! Haha! Now, I know better.

Another problem I have encountered is in upvoting. I guess, maybe as a newbie, everyone wants to see what stuff you're made of. Maybe fellow Steemians are waiting to see the nature of your posts, or what you bring to the table, before upvoting you. Who blames them? I just have to show them I'm made of solid gold.

Ultimately, it all boils down to ignorance. Because Steemit is so unique and so different from conventional social media, we get a rude awakening. It's easy to copy and paste a piece of information on other social media platforms; on Steemit, you have @Cheetah waiting to gladly upvote your post, ultimately scaring away people.

The amazing part of this beautiful MitUp5 story is that it's also a newbie, @Vheobong, who's organizing this. She's about 3 weeks old, but she is teaching us the little she's learnt. That's one valuable lesson I'm learning here; the outpouring of love. And, guess what? After a training period of 5 weeks, I, as well as the pioneer batch of MitUp5, would also pick a new set of 5 each, and spread the gospel of Steemit, till we conquer the world! #WorldDomination.

If you support this project, your upvote would go a long way! Resteem too!

I love y'all! I'm excited! First class kicks off tomorrow!

Thanks to @stach and @project20millionnaija for supporting this wonderful project!
